I have two questions
1) Can you temporarily disable the store - I take a few vacations a year, and would like the store I want to develop to close while I am away. I think the answer is no, but wanted to see if I was wrong
2) Is there an easier way to bulk list? I have at least 1000 different items I want to add, the on-line way is such a pain in the you know what!

The best way to go on vacation is to simply close all your store items.
At 2 CENTS to list and 1 CENT for gallery I don't think it will hurt too bad.
If you have a lot of store items you can write to customer service and ask them to cancel all of your auctions. Claim you have some emergency or you'd do it yourself etc etc then you'll get a refund of the fees if THEY cancel them for you.
As far as bulk listing any of the companies that are Ebay store compatible should be able to bulk launch. I use AW and frequently close all of my store items then relaunch them they are word for word the same listings as my auctions and in a few clicks I got a fully stocked store. I believe Vendio is but i'm not sure.

#2. I use AuctionSagesoftware.com, and I can change all my inventory (currently over 1200 items) to store in a click of a mouse.
And, when needed, can end all my auctions and store items with a single click of the mouse if I am away, or if Ebay offers a FLD and I want to end the store listings and redo them as auction listings (also done with a click of the mouse).
John is wonderful and the software is the best I have ever found. It is computer based versus web based which does slow down the actual posting somewhat, but it gets the job done and is posts as fast as SA Pro did.
#1. I just change out my store heading (where you can enter extra information) to enter a message like: I will be unable to respond to emails or ship items from xx to xx. Please take this into consideration when purchasing store items during this time.
