I need to ask for your help. I would like to offer an incentive for bidders that use my Vendio checkout. I was thinking of giving a shipping discount only if they use the checkout system or some other incentive. The reason being is because it will save me on time with reconciling payments. Does anybody have ideas that can help me with this? I don't want to force bidders to use the checkout system, but would prefer if they did -- hence, the incentive. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks.

Wow, this is a tough one. I for one dispise checkouts so any incentive would not influence me using it. In fact, I would likely not even bid on your item knowing that you are using check out.
With that said, here is an idea for your dilema. You could offer a rebate. Payable after payment was made and only to those using the checkout. The rebate to be sent with the item.

Hi Bizzy, I do not favor the checkout system as a seller or buyer. I think it is one of those things you either like or hate. Maybe you can offer a certain percentage off coupon on their next purchase when using your checkout feature.

Thanks. These are both great ideas. I know I know. Most hate additional checkouts. But I run 250-400 auctions a month. Using vendio postsale management is a huge time-saver. If I don't have to reconcile payments from paypal and fill in their information, then that would save me even more time. With the time that I save on all of this, I can list more.

My feeling is the results would not be worth it. Its another option you have to put in your TOS, which customers rarely read, remember, or understand. Which means more emails to answer Q's because some customers don't understand what's going on. The discount would have to come out your profit so you have to decide what dollar amount a customer using checkout is worth. 10 cents a buck, 5 bucks?

Diane - Vendio can be set up to automatically import all of the PayPal information when payment is made AND update the post-sale mgmt to step 3 AND send out Payment received notice. I can't quite remember how to do it now - maybe someone else will..otherwise I will try to figure it out later on.
I run over 1000 auctions/month and wouldn't even THINK of imposing the dinosaur Vendio checkout system on my buyers. Edited to add: I DO use most of the rest of Vendio post-sale management and update my checks/money orders manually (small percentage of sales).

Found it in PayPal Help but can't find it in Vendio (wish VD had a searchable "help" screen). Here is the PayPal information:
Seller Tools - IPN
How do I activate Instant Payment Notification (IPN)?
You can activate Instant Payment Notification (IPN) from your Profile. Show me
Note: Before activating IPN, please read the instructions to ensure that you can support the notification and authentication system.
Here's How:
Click the My Account tab.
Click the Profile subtab.
Click the Instant Payment Notification Preferences link in the Selling Preferences column.
Click Edit.
Click the checkbox and enter the URL to which you would like to receive HTML posts.
Click Save.
You have successfully activated IPN
Now you have to figure out what URL you need to use at Vendio to use the IPN from PayPal..it must be here someplace! I'll keep looking

Hi Bizzy
I too run a lot of auctions and also sell a good bit from my store. I couldn't do it without the checkout. I use all the Vendio post sale features for all I can get out of them.
To be honest, I have never understood why so many people hate it so much. I have very few problems with it. Mostly the problems are with customers who are too stupid to figure it out. These are the same people who send 10 e-mails to buy a $5 item and would have just as many problems with no checkout.
I have 2 or 3 people a month complain about the checkout. I just send them an e-mail explaining why I use it....for people who use credit cards, shop at night or while I'm at work, to cut down on paper work therefore lowering the prices of my items. 90% of my customers use it and I have the PayPal IPN. I don't offer any incentives and have never needed to. If a customers e-mails wanting the postage and address, I sent one back with a link to the checkout. I don't insist they use it, I just say "Here is the link to the checkout".

I forgot to add that you wouldn't believe how much I sell by people adding to their cart after they hit the continue shopping button on the checkout.

You are very welcome. I know it made a huge difference to me too. Now that ebay has a decent check-out and you can use the IPN for PayPal payments, I don't know why anyone accepting PP would need to use Vendio checkout. we just need to persuade Vendio to let us send out an automatic WBN outside of the check-out program.

Debbie -- That's exactly what Neglus does. She uses post-sale management. BUT, when you use vendio's checkout, the bidder can't change the shipping amount. For instance, I sell alot to the UK and Canada. The shipping is higher and the bidder can't change the amount. It was very frustrating and time consuming.

To be honest, I have never understood why so many people hate it so much.
Simple. I hate checkouts because it is a third party which has no business receiving my personal and credit card information.
I have never used a Vendio, Andale, etc etc checkout and never will.
It is also another layer. More forms to fill out. What a pain. If a seller says they use a checkout, I check out of their auction instantly.
I have very few problems with it.
Well of course you don't. You're the seller, not the poor hapless buyer.
Ran a survey a couple of years ago amongst my own customers. Asked how many would be willing to close the transaction using a third party's checkout. Fully 50% objected. For my part, I can't figure out why a seller would use a tool that is THAT unpopular.

Teacher -- You are misinformed. You do not enter any credit card information in Vendio's checkout. You select the method you would like to pay and then enter your name and address. This is for invoicing purposes. If you select payment, you are then redirected to paypal's side to pay.

I don't find the international sales to be a problem. They have to e-mail and ask for the postage either way. After I get the postage, I go into the post sale, edit WBN and change the amount. Then I e-mail them back with the link and tell them it has been changed with their postage.
The most important thing for me is that the buyer has to type in their info. I then copy and paste for the postage. If there's a mistake, it is the buyer's mistake. I can always say I mailed to the address you provided in the checkout. There have been several times I was very grateful for that.
The checkout is just easier for me to handle. I don't want to have to flip over to eBay or PayPal and then come back and check off the boxes. Since I started using the checkout everything has gone a lot smoother and has saved me a lot of time.
I'm not saying it would work for everybody. I'm saying it works for me.

Debbie -- You don't have to jump back and forth. If you follow Neglus instructions, whenever a bidder pays via paypal, the information is imported into vendios checkout. The boxes are automatically checked off. I checked after following the instructions, and sure enough, the payments that came through today via paypal were imported in and the boxes checked off. The "payment received" message went out automatically. When I click on "items to be shipped", they are there and ready for the packing slips to be printed. It really does save alot of time. I'm very grateful to Neglus for sharing that information with us!

Like Diane said, you are misinformed.
As for being a poor hapless buyer, What is so hard about filling in your name and address? And if you think eBay and PayPal don't sell your info you need to think again.
Would you go to Wal Mart or Target and tell them where to put their cash register? You probably do. I bet you go in once a week and complain the whole time.
I had over 1000 sales last month and only 2 or 3 people had a problem with the checkout. All of them were a pain in the butt about the whole transaction. If they don't want to come back, that is fine with me.

I use that feature also. It was a lifesaver. I've never used any checkout other than Vendio. It has always worked fine for me and my customer like it, so I never considered changing.

As a seller I tried using checkout and bidders complained daily about it and I had to agree with them.
As a buyer I pay with PayPal so checkout is a time consuming thing that I should not have to do.I feel like I am doing the sellers job. No seller is going to ship my item unless he checked to make sure he recieved my PayPal payment anyway and when he does my shipping address is in front of him.

Debbie -- It sounds like it works great for you! Always do what works best for YOU and nevermind what anyone else says. Some of the advice works for me on this board and some of it doesn't. I try first and see what happens. If I could get away with using the checkout again, I would use it, but too many either complained or had a problem using it. I do some things the exact opposite of what most say not to do on this board. BUT -- it works for ME and that's what matters, right?
1,000 sales??!!! I'll get up there some day. Right now I'm holding at about 250.

Just because we don't do what YOU say doesn't mean that our businesses are lacking in any way. My business is going great. And it sounds like Debbie's is going great too. Jealous, teacher?

I took it slow and easy. I didn't rush into anything. Mainly because I didn't have the money to rush. I built up my inventory with the money I made on sales. I put every dime back into the business.
And I made sure I gave good customer service. Most of my customers keep coming back. They know if I don't have what they want I will try to get it for them. And I will be honest with them. I once told a customer that I didn't think the item she was asking about would work for what she wanted it for. She turned around and bought several other items.
Last month was a good month. They are not all like that. I hope that the rest of the year will be better though.
