I know that this set was purchased from the long defunct Halles Dept Store and probably back in the 1950's. My grandparents quit smoking in the 1960's and banned smoking in their home so they wouldn't have had any reason to purchase this after that. It's stamped Made in HongKong. What I'm iffy on are the materials used. It weighs together 2 pounds. I think it may be pewter and brass? I'm not comfortable being iffy on the pewter and brass thing.

It looks like a brass or coppyer with a plating of some kind. Could it be silver or chrome plating?

I don't think it's plated. I'm leaning toward pewter because the piece scratches easily. I don't know much about pewter and don't know if it should weigh this much.

Cheryl, it is pewter and brass. I used to have a set just like it. Loved it! The covered piece is for holding your cigarettes (back when they rolled their own and didn't use filters) It is in very good shape. Do not do anything to clean it. The patina is what makes it so beautiful.

You can still find these in import stores, but the "Made in Hong Kong stamp would date it as older most likely.

I can picture Betty Davis picking that thing up and fishing for a cigarett for Paul Henreid.

Itray

My grandparents would have bought it in the 40's or 50's. Thanks for confirming the pewter part!
