I installed sp2 on my laptop and I am in the process of UNinstalling it - hopefully.

I have never seen so much garbage in my life. They reloaded Messenger for petes sake.

My laptop is agonizingly slllloooowwww now.

Unless you have a LOT of space and speed, I'd wait a few weeks or so.

You'd think they'd have a lite version.

It is part of their methodology. Their next 'latest and greatest' OS will be trumpeted as speeding up your computer. Darn, it will need periodic 'fixes' to hinder bootleggers. I don't know which is sorrier, the bootleggers or Microslut.

Oh gosh ... I was just going to pop in here to post on the 'computer help' thread, that since i installed service pack 2 this morning, the ONLY thing I have noticed different about my computer today, is that my computer is running much faster than it was before! ... hmmmph!

I installed it 2 weeks ago with no problems. However I have XP Professional, this might make a difference.

Need help on installing XP service PK 2. To begin with, I have old fashioned dial up. Time estimated for download and install ation was approxmately 8 1/2 hrs. Decided to be brave and started at 8am today. Got past the halfway point after 5+ hrs. and then download was abruptly terminated with the notice that installation failed. Cannot find any answers on Microsoft site to learn why.

Tomw111 Tried to do so using your link and all the page says is "Order your CD service pack 2 but there is no link to order. It is blank underneath. The column on the left I gather is for downloads.

Gosh! Thanks for the help. The complete page came up this time and I submitted an order for the CD. which should arrive in 4 to 6 wks - (in English too because that is all I speak and read.) This board is the greatest ever for good information You should read all the drivel on e-bay boards.

One more question. The confirmation order states the CD product name is XP professional sp2 etc. I have the XP home but the CD grouped all versions together. Does that mean this patch serves all?

That's the way I read it -- I did a trial order FROM the XP HOME home page & this is what is ordered:

Windows XP Professional SP2 English NA Patch CD Web Only Pro/Home

So, looks like ONE CD fits all ~

I installed it about 2 weeks ago, can't say computer ant different.
No faster No slower.

The only thing it did install that I don't understand is a program called:

Java Web Start.

When I looked at it it made no sense to me.
Don't know what it is or what it's for!

Guess one size does fit all or maybe there is something on the CD where you select Home or Professional. Thought I read in a on another thread where glassgrl stated there was a difference between the 2 upgrades..

that's what you get for thinking LOL

no, that was the backup feature. It's available automatically on professional but has to be installed on home XP.

I think I'll be like the IBM guys (google it)and wait a couple of months before I try the xp2 again. I bypassed it downloaded all the other updates though.

Just too many features for me right now. It had the wireless or Network connection feature and a brand spanking new Real Player and the infamous Messenger (which I hate)

I also noticed that the install/uninstall Microsoft features were gone when I tried to uninstall the messenger thingy.

I did the XP2 unistall and rolled it back a day (without backing anything up) and it seems ok.

GG:

I'm not sure what you refer to when you note: "messenger thingy?"

Do you mean: Windows Messenger (not to be confused with MSN Messenger)? The NEW default for SP2 is WM turned OFF

Guess I got confused since I was concentrating on the service pack2 update. By the way, when you refer to backup, do all those CDs I made using recovery Creator count as a bakeup? This because there was no so-called backup for me to install.

tomwiii Windows Messenger or Microsoft Messenger, I didn't pay any attention to which it was. All I know is that I had that icon in my lower right toolbar (again) by default...which I didn't have before. I DO know that that Messenger feature is one of those things that runs continously in the background and is almost impossible to get rid of.

Hey, I managed not to run out and buy WindowsME either. 98 ran good enough for me then thank goodness. But XP IS a better system. I'll just wait until they have the bugs worked out or until it's compatible with more programs.

buyhigh ... glassgrl said: no, that was the backup feature. It's available automatically on professional but has to be installed on home XP.

-----
but what I think she meant was vice versa ... on professional you have a button to click that says 'back up' in the utilities, but in Homey Edition the button is not there because it will automatically back itself up, where if you need to undo, you can hit the 'restore' button in utilities, instead.
