I've got a set of 6 small plates. They belonged to the grandmother of an elderly friend of mine. They're marked on the back "Handpainted Nippon Toya Royal". Any help as to pattern, age, etc. would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

I don't know the pattern, but Nippon was made from 1891 to 1921 by many companies, Morimura Bros. (Noritake) being most well know. Hope that helps a little.

I know some has the word "Nagoya SNB" on the back...I've found some information on those but could find nothing with "Royal Toya" and the backstamp on the plates I have. Thanks for the info. Maybe someone will recognize it.

Coincoach is correct,Nippon is simply the import mark for anything imported from japan between 1891-1921.

When you see something marked "handpainted",99% of the time it is NOT.I believe the plates are "transfer" decorated, and then a couple of strokes from a brush, then they can call it "handpainted".

Selling "handpainted" plates that were not really handpainted was very popular in the early 1900's.Where real quality handpainted Nippon,France or Austria pieces are desireable,I'm afraid even though they are old,the tranfer plates aren't worth a lot.

If you haven't already, you can try Gotheberg.com. Good site for Japanese, Chinese marks and mfg id's.

Thanks all...Yes, these are transfer-design...I did check out the Gotheberg site...not much help on these although that site has been VERY helpful in the past in the identification of an antique piece of Satsuma I had. I guess I'll just put them on and see what happens. Thanks for the help...
