I had a phone call & then an email from Overstock.com. They are setting up a new auction site in the coming weeks. There is a 4 page article on auction bytes.com.

Why don't we all try 10 auctions and see how it goes? I would LOVE it, if only ebay have some competition.

I signed up and placed three ads.

that sounds like a great idea. I wouldn't mind putting up 10 auctions to get the ball rolling. I am sick of feebay overcharging for their service. I don't mind paying reasonable fees, but this is absurd how high their rates are getting.

I've put just one on right now. Mine has a reserve and a Buy it Now and it's so much cheaper than Ebay. Haven't checked it yet today. Put it on last night.

I have registered and plan to try one or two auctions tomorrow. What the heck ... might as well try. Remains to be seen how well the site behaves. I wonder if Vendio will support it?

I would be ESTATIC, ntm: dance naked in the streets, singing "Happy Days Are Here Again" if these folks give feeBay a run for their money, but don't hold yer breath, anticipating cheap thrills...

If both YAHOO and AMAZON threw in the towell, these nobodies donna stand much chance against the 3000lbs gorilla

We need some Daddy Deep-Pockets, such as MS or GOOGLE or AO-SMELL to make a daring committment in order to break this MONOPOLY...

Think it'll happen??

Tom...Interesting concept. I've long thought AOL might give it a try. Google is a possibility, and a joint venture between the two would be formiddable. The best case scenario would be for mrs Gates to get stiffed by a crooked Ebay seller and get a canned Ebay response to her complaint, and get Bill pissed off. Ebay would be history.

I listed an item at Overstock: Christina Aguilera vend sticker set. Would sell for a couple bucks on eBay.

I started it at 1 cent, and haven't had a bid yet. Still 5+ days until auction end.

Oh yeah, Overstock charges 20 cents a listing.

This site will need a jolt to get off the ground. I believe Vendio could play a part in it. They need to convince Overstock.com to advertise on their site. They also need a customer support rep (moderator) to come over here and refresh our memory on how to attach images and descriptions and counters through Legacy to auction sites they don't yet support. I haven't used that function since they started supporting Ebay motors, and it would probably take me awhile to clear the cobwebbs out and start doing it again. They also need to figure out a way to give a break on the dime a pic fee for that method of listing until they start supporting the site. It'll take some volume sellers dragging their customers over there to make the needle on the auction Richter scale start to move.

Dad,
Are we looking at the same site? Overstock has a collectible category with quite an array of sub-categories.

There will be a free Windows Application called O-Lister released tomorrow. You will be able to list multiple auctions. They are now running TV ads. FeeBay has taken all the mentions of Overstock off their discussion boards.
Are you listening eBay?

COOLNESS!! Overstock requires a credit card number to bid(or sell). Might be a bit of a pain, but VERY nice for the sellers!

I listed a few items (on overstock.com)that had not sold on eBay after several re-lists. Withing 48hrs they had ALL received more hits than they did in a week at eBay & one has a bid!
With a listing fee of only .23 & free gallery shots.... I'm going to throw a few more items on OS & see if they do as well.

I think requiring a cc to register may help reduce the amount of NPBers (hope hope)

Vendio ~ PLEASE look into making listing at OS via Vendio possible.

Subject: introductions
Hi everyone. I am Patrick. If Sam is The Tech Guy, that makes me The Check Guy. Meaning, I am the guy who wrote the checks for Sam and Holly to build this, and that's all. (I'm also known as "CEO". They pretty much want me to stay out of their way, but said I should come to this message board, however to communicate with eBay Sellers.

I want to thank all of you for being patient with us and the little glitches you have seen for a few days. We have been working on this software for the whole year, and tested it all as thoroughly as it could be tested. But there is no way you really can get it right until you get it in production, and see the results.

We soft-launched Friday and Holly, Sam, and their team have been working all weekend to fix any glitches that appeared. The whole time they were I was worrying about seeing angry messages: "Oh man I cannot believe you can't get this right." Instead, everyone seems to have been supportive and understanding as could be (unlike, for example, when we mail a toaster to someone and it doesn't work). I love the karma of auction people.

Lots of the little bugs are getting cleaned up, but I know there are still a few. Rest assured they are working furiously on it. And Sam is sending O-lister to them that want it.

Today is hard launch. Traffic into auctions is already up 10X what it was yesterday.

Very soon, in just a matter of days, we will start running a TV commercial that is auction-specific. It is pretty outrageous. Our goal is to drive so much traffic that the ratio of traffic/products is much, much higher than it is on eBay. That is the key ratio that will generate higher clearing prices for you sellers.

I am surprised to hear that eBay took down any messages mentioning us. (I swear, incidentally, that none of us are posting on eBay's board: tempting as that was, we all took an oath not to, and are just reyling on natural word-of-mouth). But any help you can give us getting the word out would be great. The more buyers who can hear that eBay finally has a competitor, the better it will be for all sellers.

Incidentally, I love eBay. It is the one competitor in the Internet who has always been managed by adults. But we all know what happens in the absence of competition, and we have watched closely the dynamics over at eBay for a couple years. We know there is disaffection within the community, even among diehard loyalists. We don't expect to take half of eBay's business. We just want to get big enough that it works for us, and eBay has to negotiate with its sellers fairly. Our interests are aligned that way. Anything you can do to help us build this site, by posting auctions and helping to lure buyers here, will be in all of our interests, and deeply appreciated.

Regards,
Patrick
The Check Guy

PS The more posts you can leave here with suggestions for how to improve and what to fix, the better."

I am REALLY liking OS....I would 'Dance Naked in the Streets(or at least in my backyard) If Vendio supported Overstock.....Lets all go over there and ask their CEO if they would support Vendio.....I would be in Heaven,,,,,,Heeeaven!

PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE! Vendio Support them...They will get better and better! I think really fast too!

BTW-Overstock.com has been around like, FOREVER! They have regular customers, I know some personnaly. They have a great rep, so I really think this is going to take off. I think eBay will be shaking in their shoes....

**Glassgrl** I will be your friend,(smiling) I do agree, we have to get them to put into the Properties whether or not you want to be email notified when someone wants to 'Be a Friend'. Having it on the Network page is good enough when people have your ID.
Later,

dadof stickboy: I haven't had any trouble at all. I have posted six autions, one this morning. From what I read on the message board, they are having to get more band width because of the larger than expected turn-out. Seems they might have thought of that beforehand, but it does seem that they are willing to answer questions and are monitoring the message boards. Some people are getting bids. I'm doubtful but hopeful.
