I just ran it and found "backweb". Thanks for the info!

Been having system problems for weeks now. Last night something even reset my Explorer security values and I could not log into Ebay, Vendio or Paypal until I reset all of my security levels. Strange....

Free spyware downloads should be approached with caution. Some are there to collect info from you and your computer so they can send you more spam!

If your running your spy hunters and find backweb, make sure that it isn't HP's support. Its a pain to put back in again! (Voice of experience)

Thanks for the info Kevin. I have a Compaq and try to keep all their "stuff" off of my system. At least I did until the last 2 weeks. Somewhere between msconfigs and disk recoveries, I got it all back and haven't taken the time to find out where it is hiding. If Backweb is part of their support, I'll never miss it.

I need to be listing instead of babying my laptop!

Just thought I would warn you. Poor lap top, just needs a little TLC. Good luck finding all of their hiding places!

kevinatgrannys - question. I never did find out how to put HP backweb back. It is not a progran so could not follow up on glassgrl's suggestions. How did you do it?

why would you want to reinstall backweb?

"Backweb is a generic, background downloading tool that software vendors can incorporate into their product to download data (e.g. product updates) to the user's PC. Its operation depends on the instructions given to it by the individual software vendor who bundles it. While this software has been neither exhonorated nor convicted of malice, some aspects of its installation and operation appear suspect. Additionally, some users have associated it with the appearance of unwanted advertising windows."

You want to update? go to the web page!

If I remember right I had to do a system restore then go to HP and have them insert something else in. Turned out to be long and involved and I would NOT go through it again. They ended up messing with all of the settings that I had and I spent days trying to get it back to "normal"!
Hope that helps, if not just ask and I'll try to remember it all in great irritating detail.

Does Spybot happen to be a spyware program itself?

Actually I had spybot delete it because I kept getting all sorts of annoying popups from Compaq trying to get me to buy stuff I did not want. Just thought there might be a notification of some upgrade although my computer is now over 1 yr. old and I have that annoying little window when I log on now that says to the effect that the pathway to backweb is invalid or words to that effect. Ofcourse clicking "OK" takes care of that. However do not think I want to go through the problems kevinatgranny's mentioned to reinstall it.

that's easy enough to fix buyhigh.

Start - Run - msconfig - startup

Uncheck Backweb!

That way it won't try to "load" when your computer starts back up.

You might find some other things on there that aren't necessary to run your computer.

What is MyWebSearch EMail Plugin?

I'm getting the same error message as buyhigh but I didn't see Backweb to uncheck.

Glassgrl - do not understand what you want me to do. Do you mean click start - click Run - and type in what in the box? misconfig-startup? Sorry I am a bit dense. I do find backweb under all programs - startup - compaq connections. When I click compaq connections, I get Runner error - invalid backweb application ID xxxxx

bottom left hand corner of your computer, click START, go to RUN, type in the box msconfig. That will bring up a control panel looking thing. From there, (depending on your OS) under the
STARTUP section, you will see everything that loads onto your computer system when it starts up. You can uncheck the backweb and it will not bring that box up when you start your computer.

Then the next time your computer starts up, you may get a box that says something like "you have chosen to start your computer in the diagnostic mode blah blah blah". Click the box that says "never show me this again".

Hi glassgrl ... i went to that 'startup' thing you were talking about, and am amazed at how MANY things are there! are those all programs 'running the background' while i do my computer work??

... UNFORTUNATELY, I don't know which ones are rather 'necessary' and which ones are not, because I can't tell by the jargon/file names what ... i sure would like to have a faster boot-up by getting rid of some of them.

there is one little icon in my tray on the bottom right that when i hold my cursor over it, it reads, "safely remove hardware" ... well cripe, i never remove hardware, so why is that there?

also, what is 'winamp agent'?

everything you ever wanted to know about what under the startup panel may be.

{{note}} unchecking anything from the startup panel does NOT unistall the program or whatever. It only stops it from starting up or loading when your computer starts.

some things are vital to your computer. The start up list link above is huge, but you'll just have to wade your way through it.

the easiest way is to go to your toolbar at the top (if you choose the .zipped option) and to click edit and "find on this page"

or they have the alphabetized version.

do NOT uncheck anything unless you're sure of what you are unchecking, otherwise, your computer might not start up!

but there are tons of things on there that microsoft loads automatically.

I mean, who needs real player to run in the background? If you need to open it, it opens!

Did what you said and typed msconfig. Window - System configuration utility popped up. 1. Normal start ( checked) load all device drivers and service. 2 diagnostic startup load basic drivers and services. 3 selective startup . I assume I am to check Diagnostic startup. What will I lose if I do that?

no you don't have to do that. just go to the startup tab. windows will automatically configure it for you...hence the pop up box the next time you restart.

did you find the backweb in the startup panel?

under the pac's portal link up there, "how can I identify these programs?" are pics to click and enlarge about whatever OS you're running. It will show you the startup tab you're looking for.

NO! Backweb is not there but Compaq Connections is so I am assuming that Compaq incorporated Backweb with their connections. At least that is the way it shows when I check out "all programs"
