The Home Shopping Network has a little hand-held steamer called the Shark for sale this hour, and it reminds me of something I've been wanting to ask here.

They showed it cleaning jewelry; is that a good idea for most metal jewelry I'd want to sell?

And of course they show it cleaning shower doors, stoves and ovens, etc. I've wondered how they actually work and would love to hear from someone who has one of these gizmos.

There's a trailing message along the bottom that says actual time for cleaning may vary, so I wouldn't expect miracles. I'm just tired of scrubbing things and not getting good results!

I don't know about the Shark but a year or so ago I bought the Steam Buggy. It was awful! Messy and didn't do the job. I was very disappointed. I didn't try it on jewelry though. Sounds like the shark is the same principle. Just my experience.

I have a Steam Buggy that I bought for $5.00 and LOVE IT! It does as good of a job as my jeweler does for diamonds. I'm not sure if you'd want to use it on paste jewelry though.

The Shark has had bad reviews on breaking and leaking.

They don't tell you that they only run for about 15 minutes, but I've put extra water (more than the cup they recommend) in mine and it runs longer.

It gets things very very clean.

If you want to try one out, buy it from somewhere you can take it back if you don't like it. Walmart doesn't carry them but Target does. Home Depot or Lowes might. HSN has a liberal return policy I know.

oh, and they DON'T clean ovens!

Toilets, yes.

Ovens, no.
