According to folklore, October's full moon is called the "Hunter's Moon" or sometimes the "Blood Moon." It gets its name from hunters who tracked and killed their prey by autumn moonlight, stockpiling food for the winter ahead. You can picture them: silent figures padding through the forest, the moon overhead, pale as a corpse, its cold light betraying the creatures of the wood.
The Blood Moon rises this year on Wednesday, Oct. 27th. At first it will seem pale and cold, as usual. And then ... blood red.
It's a lunar eclipse. Beginning at 9:14 p.m. EDT (6:14 p.m. PDT), the moon will glide through Earth's shadow for more than three hours. Observers on every continent (map) except Australia can see the event: The pale-white moon will turn pumpkin orange as it plunges into shadow, becoming eerie red during totality.

Gosh, Glassgrl, you're giving me the willies!
Would have been totally wonderful if it took place on Halloween!
No moon here yet. Got some clouds drifting by with bright stars interspersed.

It's a promotional stunt by the Red Sox. It will turn red tonight at the exact same time as they win the pennant.

That is taken thru our 20x telescope, Kinda makes you feel very, very small, Eh...
Tried to get better photos, but too hard to line up the camera on the tripod with the swivel on the scope. I must be getting old, I just shake too much!

How do you get a digital camera to take pictures through a telescope?
I've got a huge 10" reflector in the garage that I'd love to pull out and find a use for. Digital pictures would be fun!
Cloudy here in Ohio too!

replay, I set up my telescope and then set the camera (Nikon 3200) up on a tripod with its lense seated in the telescope's eye piece.
Here is our telescope http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&category=28181&item=3848764102&tc=photo
Camera thinks it is taking a picture of a picture. Have the autoflash off. I came across the "know how" last year while looking at a site for eclipses. Sorry, I don't remember the site.
** Just wanted to add, be careful taking shots of the full moon thru any magnifying optics. It can burn out something in your camera. Taking direct pics of the sun is a no-no also.

Thank you McJane. I'm a little disappointed that it was not in better focus. Thru the telescope you can actually see the craters on the moon.
But I had not thought of taking the pics until Neglus said they couldn't see it.
It was quite the comedy. I was working in the dark trying to balance tripods and configure camera settings. To say the least, things were a little shaky. Maybe I'll be set up better next time.

I had a perfect view from my kitchen window. The clouds kept getting in the way but I did see it. Very cool. Cosmic.
