We found a box stuffed away at grandmas, that is a pink plastic( is probably the 50's or 60's )with strand of pearls inside, 3 stranded but the pearls are really discolored, What should I do to them if anything? or sell them as is? Your thoughts please, advise welcome.

Hmmm, got a pick?

Start by rubbing them on your teeth, rough should indicate real.

It has been posted here that it isn't the surest way.

Are they knotted?

You also examine them closely for paint chips, bubbles and seams.

Rub them gently in a soft cloth, examine it under good light. If you can see trace of the nacre glimmering on the cloth, that can help.

Very lightweight pearls that are graduated can be the natural pearls, versus the heftier cultured ones.

Clasps are also a good indicator: karat markings can give you a hunch. Even gold fill.

Know anyone with an xray machine? hehe.

That is my personal experience. Hope it helps. I am sure there are those with much more experience.

Are you trying to tell if they are real or how to clean them?
Japerton pretty well covered that.
As for cleaning!
If they are real - I've read that milk will clean them but I've never tried this?
If they aren't real - try a very soft toothbrush and soapy water. Just brush the pearls very lightly and dry as you go. I have soaked fake pearls before with good results but they have to be in pretty good condition or the pearl coating will start to flake away.
You always take a chance cleaning fake pearls and if they aren't too bad you may want to just leave them as it.

Good morning

Also if they turn out to be cultured Pearls and you say they are in bad shape, well just leave them in the open air for as long as it takes for them to clear up and fix themselves.
My pearls were packed since my wedding in the original casing of satin I didn't ware them alot and 26yrs later my oldest daughter was getting married I wanted her to have my pearls that my husband gave me for my wedding day. When I opened the case they were so bad looking, I was advised by a jeweler to leave them exposed to the air and they will fix themselves up.
Sure enough they turned back to like when they were first given to me, so beautifully, I was so amazed. I guess its not a good idea to keep Pearls in a tightly closed case where they don't get air at times.
