I'm a bit of a math nut, but this one has me stumped. If a picture is 120kb, and I want to figure out how long it will take to load on standard dial-up of 56k, how long will it take? I checked deadzoom and my figures are WAY off. So, obviously, I have it wrong. Does 56k mean 56kbs? And if so, wouldn't it only take a couple of seconds to load?

Thanks.

Bizzy.... if I remember my units and forumulas correctly... a picture that is 120K is actually 120 kilobytes... A modem with a speed of 56kbs is 56 kilobits per second. Every Byte = 8 bits... so, to figure out the download time... you would multiply your picture size times 8, and then divide by your optimal speed:

(Picture Size in Kilobytes * 8) / Optimal Speed

Keep in mind that on a 56kbs modem, you may not always get the full 56kbs (depending on various factors... but for your example, let's say you get an average of 42000 bits per second, your formula would look like this:

(120,000 bytes * 8) / 42000 bits per second

which would equal roughly 23 seconds. Hope that helps!

Thanks so much, eauction ... I now know where I was making my mistake! I love to figure these kinds of things out. Kind of makes the tedious picture scanning a bit more challenging when trying to figure out download times.

Hence the reason to not overload your auctions with too many pictures. Remember if an auction page takes longer then 48 seconds to load, the chances of the person backing out of your page increases by 85%.

Another reason to love Photoshop! The 'save for web' option gives you the load time calculation and allows you to adjust picture quality in order to tweak the time if you wish.

If it's really "common" sense, why do so few people actually have it?

Bizzy - I have Photoshop 7. It's super simple but I have to qualify that with a "for me" since I have been using Photoshop since back when 3.0 came out. For years Photoshop was my video game and when I had time I temped at a professional lab doing digitial retouch during the holidays. Lots of digital dermitology on senior pics and taking the six mediocre family portraits and turning them into 1 great one where everyone's eye were open, no stray strands of hair, proper smiles, taking hated mother in laws out of wedding portraits, relocating portait locations from generic studion to lawn of sprawling Freanch Chateau, etc. Most fun of all was fixing the lab screw ups. It's not all that rare that negs get damaged (scratches, tears etc) in the developer and I got the fun of fixing the image so that we could burn a new negative and the customer didn't kill us.

I love the program but it does take time to learn all of the ins and out of it and just when you think you have it down, you see the work of someone like this guy.... http://www.photoshopcafe.com/gallery/guitar.htm who created the images that you see on that page entirely within Photoshop with no base photos or scans and realize that you still have MUCH to learn.

Diane,

I use Photoshop Elements v.2.0 and it also has the save for web feature. This program is MUCH less expensive than Photoshop ($99 vs. $599) and has most of the same features (it just doesn't have some of the pre-press functions, automated macros, etc...). I actually teach an Intro to Photoshop Elements session as one of my courses at the College I work at.... and I teach people the basics of the program in about 2 hours. Of course... there's no real way to master any problem except to work with it reguarly... but all in all, it's not too difficult to pick up. I've done some great things with the program that have saved me days worth of time. Hope that helps!

I am going back to dial up. For what I do that is okay for me. I am now on RR and I hate it. My scanner and printer don't work with road runner. I have to disconnect RR in order to use my scanner. I have tried a couple of times to reformat it but it just won't work. The web pages seem to for a better word "hang up" and I have to reboot. I live in an apartment building and it is not set up for high speed so dial up is the way to go for me. When I shut down there is some program always running in the back and it won't let me, but I can't find out the program so then I have to reboot again. With vendio charging for the number of images my upload won't take as long as I am now limiting the pictures I use in my auctions. With RR it only takes a short time and I now it but since I do nothing else a little longer won't be a problem.

Thanks, eauction!! I wouldn't need to upgrade anything just yet either. 2.0 seems to be the better option at this time. Although in the future, I would really like 3.0. I still need to install more memory into my computer (as discussed on the other thread) and hope that will be a present from Santa.
