my phone number up front. He refuses to use the vendio check-out or email his information, but says he won't pay unless I email him my phone number. I've never had this happen, and frankly, it makes my uncomfortable. I've told the buyer this, but he persists.
Anyone had experience with this? Advice?
Thanks.

Well, he can get your phone number through eBay and if he requests it you'll get his number also.
Do you accept CC's through some entity other than PayPal? If so, his request makes sense.
I wouldn't send my CC number in an email and I stubbornly and steadfastly refuse to go through Vendio or anybody else's checkout.
But, if you only take CC's from PayPal, it wouldn't do him any good.
Personally, I don't see any problem with him having your phone number if your set-up is for CC's other than PayPal but to each his own.

I take credit cards, but I won't let them call me. It's in every auction - Credit Cards can only be used through our Vendio Checkout system or PayPal.
Does he give a reason why he wants your phone number? If not I wouldn't give it to him.

Give him your cell phone number instead.
But, like Lucy said, he can get your phone number through ebay anyway.

If you feel uncomfortable about the request BEFORE he has won your item, simply inform him about that & block him from bidding on your stuff. Who needs extra aggravation?

Tell him that because of your conviction for wire fraud, the terms of your parole prohibit you from having a telephone.

Is this nitwit a newby.
Lucy is right, he can easily get your phone number from eBay. Tell him to get it that way if he wants it so bad & let him know eBay will also send you his number.

I kinda don't understand what is happening here.
Could you explain this a little more fully.
I don't know why it would make you uncomfortable him having your phone number, but is that because you process a buyers credit card? and he wants to give you the information over the phone?
Maybe I need another cup of coffee ....to wake up.......lol

Guys...there's not much more of a story to tell. The guy won't use the check-out, won't respond in any way other than sending me emails saying: "I want your phone number before I pay".
I don't have any info. on this buyer and I do not process credit cards.
I just wondered if anyone has had this kind of thing happen, and how did you handle it?

I have had this happen to me before. Some people are so paranoid that Vendio will sell their information. I just arrange a time to call them and get it over with.

I had this happen when I first started on EBay - before I was using Paypal (maybe before Paypal). I simply told him I was not comfortable doing that and why did he need it. He said he just always got a phone number when he did business with people.
It turned out he was a very old-fashioned and courtly gentleman and it was a pleasant transaction - not sure why it made me uncomfortable - but it did. Might not react the same way now, though.

I am not getting this either, what is the big deal about a customer having a phone number to call you? I have a toll free number, I want customers to call me because I want their business! If you feel uncomfortable about having your ebay number going to your home, then get a cel phone or a 2nd line. Nobody gets my home phone number on ebay, but I have no problem giving out my business phone number.
I've found that going out of your way a little for customers (sometimes called customer service) can go a long way in developing a good business relationship with someone...Not everyone likes automated checkout systems.

As the others have said, your phone number as an eBay seller isn't top secret.
We list our phone number in all of our auctions. We much prefer email contact, but if they really want to talk to us, well then ...

It's possible this buyer may have been burned by a bogus Ebay seller, and just wants to make sure you are a live legitimate seller instead of a boileroom scam operation. There is presently another thread running, concerning a non delivering seller, in which the OP is dealing with a fly by night seller that has over $600.00 of his money and he has not received his item. Why not put a good foot forward. Pull his contact info, call him up and speak to him directly. Find out what the problem is instead of operating on guesswork. This could well be an opportunity to snag a good repeat customer.

It sounds to me like this buyer wants to confirm the seller's ID before sending a payment.
I agree with sparkz. I would do the "request contact information" thing, and give him a call first.
But ... is there something about this guy that gives you a hinky feeling?
Something that's setting off your instincts?
Is he geographically near you, or distant?
