DSI stands for Discount Shipping Insurance. The company is located in the LA suburbs & is underwritten by St. Paul Fire & Marine Insurance Co., one of the nations biggest & oldest Casualty insurers. They charge 40 cents per $100.00 of insurance for USPS & 9 cents/100 for FedEx & UPS because of the carrier picks up the first $100.00. As of 1-3-05 FedEx will be charging 45 cents/100. I just shipped a $560.00 watch, the insurance was less than $3.00 by DSI, It would have been like $6.00 by USPS. It really makes a difference on the lower end, 40 cents compared to $1.30 for the first $100.00 of value.

They don't require it, but your rates can be cheaper with it. So far, so good with them for me. I am very pleased with their customer service, and their speed in paying a claim. I started with a per piece plan (where I would choose what I wanted to insure but moved to a flat rate structure so everything I ship is insured. It is really quite nice not to worry about whether it gets damaged or does not get delivered, I get paid regardless.

I'm going to ship my first package using DSI - my buyer was really skeptical too!

He just kept saying, gee the USPS paid off one time.

I told him I was paying for it and I believed in Sanmar's advice

I haven't tried them but after reading about DSI from comments on this board, I'm going to look into it more. I haven't heard any negative comments.

Here's the link to the DSI website. http://www.dsiinsurance.com/

I never tell the buyer whom I am insuring with. They won't know it & if there is a breakage, then I will handle the claim. All that is important is they get reimburse3d. Oh yes, DSI will also include the postage in the total cost of the claim, if you include it in the amount insured.

What volume do you have to ship to get the rates you quote?

The single-shipment rate looks like .90 / $100 plus .45 , no savings for a small ticket item.

Or am I missing something?

My contract spells out .40 per $100.00 of value with no extra fees, .10 per $100.00 for FedEx & UPS as the carrier insures the first $100.00.

I have use them about 5 or 6 times and so far so good. Something I shipped DHL and didn't trust their insurance and a few that I shipped USPS with an online label but wanted to insure over $200. It was less expense and I didn't have to stand in line.

ewora,

What's the .38 rate for? I'm paying DSI .50 per $100.00 of USPS Domestic with DC and .95 per $100.00 of USPS International.

We pick and choose which items we insure each month, submitting weekly reports.

I got the lower rate because the items I ship are usually valued in the $5.00 to $25.00 range with an estimated 200-400 packages per month.

$.60 to Canada, $.85 other international.

I also can pick and choose what I want to insure and submit a report monthly.
