I just did a Google search for "register a domain," and got a huge number of listings for services that include domain registration plus other services.

But for now, I just want to register a name to reserve it. I've established that the name is not yet taken.

Does anyone have a link to the organization in charge of domain registrations?

Is it free if you go the direct route, or is there a filing fee?

Thanks for any help.

It cannot be done free. There are companies that advertise "free" domain registration but it either comes with a contract for hosting (cost of registration built into hosting fees) or the name is actually registered to them and basically leased to you. If you default then they can benefit from any value that you have added to the name on the resale market.

The best place to go to register a name that you have no intention of using in the short term would probably be the NetworkSolutions.com Internic is actually the "keeper of the Kingdom" but you cannot register directly with them. Network Solutions is the original go between. Basic fee is $35 a year with discounts for longer periods.

If it's really "common" sense, why do so few people actually have it?

You can do MUCH better than $35 - I use dotster (www.dotster.com) for my domain registrations, they are under $15 and sometimes they run specials.

wow... no one has discussed domain names on this forum in a long time, and I had been thinking about asking this questions for a while, regarding Domain Names and eBay.

Does anyone know if the following scenario is legit with ebay? ... i have a domain name, (yes, thru NeworkSolutions aka netsol) ... it gives the option of forwarding/linking the to domain to anything we want ..... if we have strictly an eBay Store and ebay listings, can we link our domain name to our ebay store/listings? ... i think it's 'ok'?

Aintrich: you mean going to www.yourdomain.com and seeing your eBay listings? Sure it's legal, I linked to my eBay store for several months.

Try http://www.replaymedia.com

It's currently pointing to my Amazon store, but it's the same concept.

rozrr: try http://www.godaddy.com - it's $7.95 per year and they have a great interface to "do things" with your domain. I currently have about 20 domains through them and love it!

Yes... GoDaddy is the way to go.

I use it. I love it. The interface is very busy, way too many links and images and functions, so it takes a bit to find everything, but it is simply the best thing out there for ease of use and low prices.

My 2¢
