Okay I'm ticked.

I come home from work tonight to find that there are bids on items in my account that I did not place. Now I've got bid retractions on my record that are not really retractions because I did not make them (but I cancelled the bids).

I tried to contact the seller but I can't do it. My computer freezes when I click on the "Contact Seller Link".

Spyware.

Stupid spyware.

So I've changed my eBay password and my Yahoo account password. As soon as I find out where I'll be changing this password as well as my bank and my Child Support Website password.

I ran AdAware and it found 40 Critical Objects all of which I quarantined and deleted. I just ran that sucker TWO days ago.

I just downloaded Spybot and I'm running it now.

What else should I do? I feel so...violated. I almost had a heart attack when I saw bids for Playstation games. We don't own a Playstation let alone would I be bidding on high priced games for it!

I have EZ Firewall but it's apparently not working?

I need a decent Firewall that is a free download, at least at the moment, i can't buy anything.

Suggestions, help!

I assume you are using some version of Microsoft Windows, and some version of Microsoft Internet Explorer.

1) Download the critical updates for your system 2) Set your security preferences on your web browser to high.

Spyware isn/t your problem. You have either logged into a spoof site and given the information, or you have a keystroke trojan residing in your system. Go to Trendmicro NOW and get your system scanned for viruses and trojans. Here's the link: http://www.trendmicro.com/free_tools/
It will take a while the first time you visit the site because it will have to download a large signature file, but future visits will be much shorter. Let me know when you're finished and I'll give you the link to a site where you can download a free AV program that will give you 24 hr protection. Don't log into any sites that require you to give a password or personal information until after you have your computer scanned and cleaned up.

I tried to log into the site you suggested and it will not load. It says that it won't succesfully load and when I click on retry I get the same error over and over.

I never click on emails, the phishing spoof emails. Ever. So that is not what happened here.

I don't downlaod anything, I don't download music, files, nothing.

I have a Virus Scanner on my computer can I just run that?

That's strange. I've used it on several computers, and it's never failed to work. If you already have a AV program, by all means use it if it's properly updated, which means it's been updated within the last 2 days. Trojans are very rarely acquired from email attachments. As the name implies, they come hidden in legit looking programs. Screensavers, games and shareware are the most common sources. Lately, they come from infected web sites hidden inside jpegs. I have had 4 or five attempts for them to load this way. The first was actually from an Ebay auction that a VD'r posted a link to on this board. It was a joke type auction that caught his attention, but as soon as I tried to load it, McAfee detected it. I came back and posted a warning not to click on the link, but someone had already tried and the auction had been nuked by Ebay. Anyway, if your AV software has been recently updated, go ahead and do a thorough scan. Be sure to also scan any floppy disks you may have used in your computer recently.

I just ran the virus scanner after updating it and it detected nothing.

I think my New Years Resolution might be to make $50 on eBay and buy a good anti virus program.

I have Zone Alarm on my computer now, EZ Anti Virus, Adaware and Spy Bot.

God I hope I'm protected...I dont remember the last time I need that much protection... ;o)

I forgot to ask, are you on cable, DSL, or dialup. If you're on cable, you will want the best firewall you can get. The free edition of zone alarm won't get it. Also, if you're on cable, the culprit will likely be someone in your neighborhood. It doesn't take much effort at all, with common off the shelf software, to access the unprotected cable connected computers in a given area and read everything on the hard drive.

What is the free edition missing in this case? (Then again, I'm behind a router with so my computer mostly doesn't exist to the outside)

I've been installing Avast Antivirus, free for personal use, on clients' computers for about a year and nobody's had a virus.

Get rid of IE and get rid of it now. Switch to firefox! It's one of the best things I ever did!! You also need to continuously make sure your Windows and IE program are up to date. Sounds like a keystroke Trojan to me. My son's computer got attacked by a virus and his software never caught it. He had to purchase a new hard drive.

Uh porn sites? I don't think so.

How do I update my IE and Windows? I run 98 which is what came on this computer.

I had Firefox on my other computer (from a few months back) and I had a LOT of problems with it.

If you have a geek friend to help you out, now MIGHT be a good time to look at Linux. My Windows system starting falling apart last weekend and I finally made the complete switch to Suse 9.2 Linux.

My scanner, video card, and most surprisingly wireless internet connection were all detected and set up automatically. Linux has made big improvements over the last few years.

And Firefox is also available, so you won't need to learn a new browser.

Although there is NOTHING that can be done about phishing emails, viruses and spyware are nearly unheard of for Linux.

I still have a second PC running Windows so I can use Dazzle(Endicia) and UPS, but I don't really do much of anything else on that system. If it fries, I can just re-install two or three programs.

Linux is more complex to install (FIVE CDs or 2 DVDs for the one I just bought), so I recommended the "geek help", but once you have it running, it all works very much like Windows or Mac.

It also comes with an Office-compatible Word Processor/Spreadsheet/Powerpointclone that will probably save me hundreds of dollars in trying to stay up-to-date with Microsoft.

Yep - The BEST upgrade or repair for Windows is Linux or a Mac

Besides, with all the snow we had last week, half the people on this board are penguins already. At least they walk that way
