Hi glassgrl ~

I installed Windows XP on my computer and I've done nothing but sit here in sheer frustration for nearly 3 hours now. Is there a way I can contact you outside of here to ask you a few questions?

I can't get it to recognize my printer (which I desperately need to use), I can't figure out how to turn off the pop up blocker (yes I did it through tools but it still wont' work) and a couple of other things.

I've tried to resolve this stuff by myself but I'm on the brink of tears from frustration.

If you can help me please let me know how ~
thanks.

First, breathe deeply.

well Helga I'm hearing impaired otherwise I'd tell you to call me.

hmm. Pop up blocker? On XP? Didn't know there was one?

The great thing about XP is that you don't have to install your drivers on new equipment. Usually XP has all those.

You may need to go to, control panel, add hardware.
for the printer, or run the driver disc for it.

When I went XP I couldn't use my scanner anymore even with disc.

How did you install XP.
You may need to go right in and upgrade.
Install service pack 2 if you don't have it.

I'm sorry to ask here ~ I really am. I Tried to google things and everything so I could figure some of this stuff out on my own but man...when I think I have it figured out...I'm wrong.

I haven't even tried to see if Dazzle still works. I cringe at the thought of having to redo another label...

The pop up blocker is under tools. It says turn pop up blocker off, and I did but I still get the pop ups. I will turn it back on when I'm done but I wanted to do an online chat with Hewlett Packard (my printer) and they use pop boxes...which immediately close in this.

XP SEEMS to run better on this computer but it's so different.

My server (adelphia) has a firewall/virus/spyware download and I can't even get that to work. When I click download, it asks me to log in. When I log in and go to download it tells me my session is timed out and to log in again. Circles. It runs me in circles. I checked to make sure cookies are enabled (they are) so at the moment I'm runnig without virus/firewall protector because I'm not sure where to get them since my servers aren't accessable right now.

My printer installs until it says to hook up the USB cable and after that it won't install. I no longer have the disc so I was able to download the software online. I tried to do the online chat thing with them but the pop up thing happened so I couldn't. I called them but they wanted to charge me to talk to them on the phone so that didn't work either.

Does anybody else have any idea of what's she's talking about with the POP UP blocker? I haven't a clue!

Unistall your printer. Unplug it from your computer and plug it back in. Is it USB? Under Printers (start, printers and faxes IS IT CHECKED as recognizing your printer as the default printer before you unistall it?)

XP really isn't that much different if you change how it looks. It's really so much better than 98 or ME.

It could just be it's not recognizing your port.

But I STILL don't know about the Pop UP blocker???!!

let's make your xp look a little more "normal".

Go to control panel, display - open it and under Themes, click on Windows Classic.

OOOOOOOOOHHHHH>< I just figured out you must have that darned XP2 for the popup blocker.

I KNEW there was a reason I didn't install that thing yet!

Can't help you on that one. I don't have it.

Okay XP2 ~ how do I know the difference? The box just said XP (my dad bought it).

I do like it much better than the other Windows I had (98) it's just frustrating learning my way around it. My IE doesn't stall and make my computer churn like it did before and Foxfire doesn't seem to hang and do nothing like it did before. I didn't lose my emails or my files, jpg's or anything. I just lost my connection to my printer (and I have to check Dazzle still).

right click on your My Computer icon and it will tell you the version.

But I will tell you that I have Service Pack 1 and I don't have a Pop Up Blocker.

we really should probably take this offline. I'll be up for a little while.

I can't imagine xp not recognizing your printer. I haven't had a problem installing anything with xp, but then...I don't have xp2. There is a known problem with a lot of programs not working with xp, but I didn't think printers were one of them.

Unistall your printer, shut down and start your computer back up and see if it kicks in that way. You really shouldn't even need a driver for it.

I need to know if your printer is USB or a Port, meaning if it plugs into the back of your computer.

If you did your updates after you installed XP and installed the XP2 service pack, you could rollback your computer to before you installed the service pack, I think.

Start, All Programs, Accesories, Systems Tools, System Restore.

The only thing would be if it has not set a restore point since you installed XP.

Did you just buy a retail version upgrade?

Then, it had the SP2 built in, right?

That blocker is no BIG DEAL!

It just alerts you about pop-up, and ActiveX goodies, and other stuff which MIGHT (stress MIGHT) harm yer PC!

Whenever it activates, a thin yellow bar will appear at the top of yer browser, right below the URLADDRESS BOX -- when it shows up, JUST CLICK ON IT!

When you click on it, it will present you with options, such as: run once, run always, etc!

If you KNOW the site then ALLOW it to run -- it's yer decision.

If yer unsure of the safety of the site or script, then DO NOT allow it to run...

no big deal...

Yep says Service Pack 2.

My printer works now but my scanner doesn't. There is no detection of a scanner. IT's an all in one deal ~ it all worked yesterday. Now it works only one or the other today.

Something else that's going on. I keep getting a pop up that says "Activate your Windows XP" and when I try to do so it tells me that I'm not connected to the internet (I am) and that I need to connect (I am, through cable) in order to complete the activation. What's up with that. I've tried to find an answer to that one on my own too. This is a legit copy with a key number on the back and everything.

Tom I tried that ~ I installed the program that it suggested too on the HP site in order to get their online chat pop ups to work...and it still stops the chat box and wont' proceed. It just completes haults everything.

Great feature but not when it's something I need like this.

My dad bought the retail version, opened it and then decided he would just leave his well enough alone so he gave it to me to use.

Well, what I would do, if I had just installed an XP updated version, is immediately go to WINDOZE UPDATE & let that go thru the process -- they are starting something new to block pirated copies from getting lots of support for free, so that might be the easiest way -- don't really know, it should all be automatic & very straight forward.

No, we be talking apples & oranges...

YES, when you try to use ANYBODY'S CHAT, it will probably be BLOCKED!

DO YOU SEE THE YELLOW BAR???

You have to click on that YELLOW BAR AND ALLOW THE SITE TO RUN OR IT WILL STAY BLOCKED FOREVER...

try choosing the Activate Windows by phone option.

here's how you do a bootleg copy.

Not that I would know anything about that of course...........

But you can put your CD numbers in there and everything.

SP2 is slightly different than XP...

New and enhanced security settings

You will see warning messages when you download potentially harmful files from the Internet and when Web sites try to run software on your computer, so that you'll be better informed about potential security threats.
Pop-up Blocker

Pop-up Blocker in Internet Explorer is turned on by default. This will prevent most browser pop-up windows from being displayed while you are online.
Add-on manager

Add-ons are programs, such as toolbars and stock tickers, that you can add to your browser to make browsing more fun or effective. Sometimes a browser add-on causes Internet Explorer to stop working. When this happens, the add-on manager can identify what caused the problem so that you can disable, update, or report it to Microsoft

I'm getting a new Dell desktop on Monday.

I truly hope they don't ship it with XP2 but it might.

I got it for $300.00 lower than I could find it at Christmas. $756. for a P4 with LCD Ultrasharp monitor. 512 Ram and 160GB Hard Drive.

even if your scanner and printer is an "all in one" you might need to install or have windows recognize each one. I don't know, I don't have anything like that.

I do know there are two seperate icons for them in your control panel.

One for printer and faxes and one for Cameras and Scanners.

Go look at both and see if it's showing up as what you have. If not, try installing it through those panels - add printer and add scanner.

Then you would need to check and see if your USB port is being recognized. Control panel - System - Hardware - Device Manager - and if you click on the + sign on USB it should show a printer port.

HOW OLD is the hardware?

A lot of models, the companies did not do drivers for XP...

Like my VISIONEER SCANNER could NOT work under XP...

GOTO HP site & see if there is an XP DRIVER...

great tomwiii, sounds like you're up and coherent.

I have to crash Helga. I will tell you that I get up very early in the morning though, about 5 my time - it's 10 pm my time now.

try xp2 and whatever your printer number is in google. I don't think xp2 would make a difference but it might.

I know my router is not recognized as XP "safe" and I have to click on that box that says ignore it and install it anyway.

Don't cuss your xp, it's really a good program. That was sweet of your Dad, he had to of paid some serious $$ for that and to of just passed it onto you!

My printer isn't recognized in the USB + in system hardware, it has it's own line under "Other Devices".

When I click on Cameras and Scanners there is an option for Hewlett Packard but it's just for cameras, not scanners.

What I have is a hp psc 1210v All-In-One.

I use the scanner as much as the printer for eBay so I've really got to figure this out.

I bought the scanner in May of 2003. I don't have the original disk, I've turned my desk upside down looking for it and I cannot locate it.

What am I looking for in an XP Driver?

Okay I did a search on HP and found an XP Driver for the system I have.

If I download it what do I do with it then? Will that install the scanner then?

I don't want to do anything until I hear back from someone (thank you both Glassgrl and Tom for helping me out!)

I knwo this system is supposed to be good, I'm just so frustrated because I was told I wouldn't lose any of this stuff when it upgraded and I lost one of the most imporant things I use. I just want to be able to figure this out and have things back so I can use them again.

I checked my Endicia software and it's okay. It loaded right up and connected. So that is alright. Now if I can get this figured out I'll be good.

I'm heading to bed soon too ~ it's almost midnight my time so it's late.

Thanks again!

My printer installs until it says to hook up the USB cable and after that it won't install.

shut down your computer, plug in USB or Serial cable, have printer Wired and On then start computer, computer should reconise it and install it itself.

Popup blocker,if you can't shut it down, whenever a popup tries to open a bar up by the toolbar should appear, click on it and tell the popup blocker to allow popups on this site.

Hang in there, Helga Honey! A couple of years ago, my old computer wouldn't work XP, so we had to get a new one. I wouldn't have known how to do any of the stuff you're doing right noww; thank goodness my husband could walk me through it.

You'll be very happy with XP once the dust has settled. You do have my sympathy.

I'm like dadofstickboy. I would uninstall your printer/scanner and then do what he said first. That's the way it's always worked for me.

>"shut down your computer, plug in USB or Serial cable, have printer Wired and On then start computer, computer should reconise it and install it itself."<

But, if that doesn't work, then yes, by all means, use the HP XP driver.

If the DRIVER is NO GOOD, ya HAVE TO un-install it & then INSTALL the NEW XP DRIVER...

Also, if I not mistaken, a good rule to remember is:

PARALLEL-PORT items: connect with yer PC OFF!

USB ITEMS: connect with yer PC ON!

I feel your pain! I had the same problem when I got a new 'puter with XP. At first it recognized my scanner (like yours, an HP) and printer then about a week later it didn't recognize my scanner or printer. I've had to buy an adapter for my camera. Some printers that offer new drivers are really offering a 'fudged' driver. Meaning, it hasn't been signed by MicroSoft. Those may cause you some problems. I can no longer use my scanner (didn't like using it anyway). Fortunately, there was a signed driver for my printer.

Tomwiii gave you some good advice. Here's another one . . . when you get frustrated with it, walk away from it.
