Be careful what you ask for. New Hampshire has neither a sales or income tax... the ONLY state in the union with neither.Sounds like nervona doesn't it? What we do have however is the most unbelievable property taxes.Who else, what else can they tax? This state had a canidate 20 years ago run for Govoner saying "Ax the Tax" in otherwords I will take a pledge not to raise taxes, I will ax them. This pledge is still expected to be signed (in blood!) or you WON"T be elected here! We moved here from Colorado 2 years ago. When we were looking for a house we looked in Doner towns (lower income towns, so lower property taxes) "rich" towns like Hanover, ieartmouth, are called doner towns. It was difficult to say the least to find something that met all our needs and wasn't next door to a dump!.... Income taxes and zoning ... yeah I can live with them.It is simply a social responsibility to pay for schools for all children and all the other things we expect of goverment...ie: each other!

Anchorage Alaska.
No sales or state taxes. Some of the other towns in Alaska do have a bourough or city sales tax but not Anchorage. We do have property tax.
Alaska actually pays us to live here. We get our permanent fund check every October. We only got $900+ dollars last year. The most we've recieved was about 1500+. That was several years ago.
You think we're nuts to live in all this ice and snow...but are we really?

ewa sorry I believe your wrong Alaska has a state income tax correct me if I'm wrong. But I have always been told that NH is the ONLY state with neither sales or income. We do pay federal income taxes of course.... as for how high are the property taxes. Our home in Denver sold for 150,000 more than the house we bought here. We paid $800 + a bit in property taxes in Colorado we paid $2800.00 here last year. NO WAY did our Colorado income tax and sales taxes add up to the difference. We do have 15 acres of land here and a pretty view woods and 2 ponds, but we pay for it!
PS I hate HATE winter too

Seven states have no state income tax: Alaska, Florida, Nevada, South Dakota, Texas, Washington and Wyoming. Two others, New Hampshire and Tennessee, tax only dividend and interest income. To see how other states compare, check out the Federation of Tax Administrators' listing of individual income tax rates for 2001."

6 years ago before the property values skyrocketed I owned a 4 bedroom home. My property taxes were about $1500. I'm sure they've gone up since. Our seniors are exempt from property taxes.

ewora, your towns and cities can and do levy sales taxes ours do not. We really are the ONLY state in the Union that has neither a statewide sales tax and state income tax... I suspect after looking at the link you sent and googling state sales taxes that Alaska is right behind us with only the city levies. But we do pay for the pleasure of not collectong any taxes sales or income. Our seniors are exempt from property taxes after 75 I believe. Bleed em till they drop our new state moto!
Something else we may have in common someone just hit a moose on my road and there are lots of police and ambulances out! Hope they and the Moose are OK.

In my original reply I did mention that there are some bourough and city taxes. But Anchorage doesn't charge any sales tax.
dacreson - Yes but the way I read it it's dependent upon the property you own - not your income or bank balance.
"Property owned and occupied as the primary residence and permanent place of abode by a (Senior) resident 65 years of age or older, a Disabled Veteran, or a resident at least 60 years old who is the widow or widower of a person who qualified as a Senior or Disabled Veteran may apply for an exemption of up to $150,000 of property value. "
I hit a moose once. I saw it coming so I was able to slow down enough to just kind of slide into him. He looked at me with annoyance and sauntered off into the woods.
