About 2 years ago, I switched to a TRACK-BALL -- sure did make a huge difference as to hand & elbow comfort -- after ya get used to the thingy!

Gotta agree Tom. I'm using a wireless mouse on my main computer, but I have a trackball on my other one. Can't beat a trackball. And it frees up space where you can pile more junk

Tom, about 6 or 7 years ago, my computer totally crashed. I had auctions up, and was FORCED to use my husband's computer to keep up with my auctions.
This FORCED use of his computer taught me 2 serious things:
1. I learned why they call computers PC’s – they are personal, and when one computer has to be shared by 2 people use to having their own, there is frustration and tension in abundance.
I am “the great researcher,” and I refused to replace my broken computer until I had researched everything on the market back then. Then I started comparing the limited list of then available, acceptable computers to each other, which too over a week. FINALLY my husband said, “either I had a new computer the next Monday, or he would.” Believe me I quickly made a decision.
2. At that time I used a standard “mouse” and my husband used a "Logitech" TRACK BALL. I b—ched and b—ched having to use the thing, but that is what he had attached to his computer. After a week of using it, I could not imagine EVER going back to a standard “mouse.”
First, I love not having to have the space to run the mouse all over the place, or be bothered with the other inconveniences of a “standard,” mouse.
2nd and HIGHLY important, because of my incessant b—ching, he adjusted the sensitivity of the track ball. His was so sensitive the way he had it set for him, I could hardly touch it and it FLEW all over the page. The track ball/roller ball sensitivity can be adjusted through your computer.
3. When I got my new computer in, up and running, I immediately went out and purchased a “Logitech” track ball, and would never be without one. They are fast, comfortable on the hand even after endless hours at the computer, and take up no space.
I do prefer certain models over others. Both my husband and I highly prefer the TRACK BALL, which Logitech makes that you use your thumb to move the ball. In fact we so highly prefer it, and we keep brand new units in storage as back ups, for the time our present TRACK BALLS die. Any time I find a really good price on a NEW Logitech like the one I use; I buy it, and put it away for the rainy day when mine dies.
We learned the difference in the “thumb” moving Trackball, and the one Logitech makes where you use your index finger to move the Trackball, while visiting a friend who had the Index Finger type ball, and between her curved keyboard, and her index finger Trackball, we could hardly use her computer.
It can take a few days to get use to the TRACK BALL, but once you do, you will wonder why you ever continued with the “regular, standard, chase it all over your desk,” mouse. REMEMBER their sensitivity can be adjusted.

I have four computers, and ALL of them have a "Logitech Marble Mouse" connected to them (They're actually trackballs, I don't know why they use the term mouse).
They're compatible with all the operating systems I use (Windowsm Linux, OS X) and I have NEVER had one break, even though I've been using them for years. They're the perfect size for my hand too, which is something to consider when you are buying a replacement.
I like them so much I bought two spares for use if they ever stop making them!

replaymedia I totally agree with your assessment of the Logitech, Trackball – and glad to hear my husband and I are not the only ones who have purchased back-up’s just incase the change the model we prefer.
I sit in a real office chair with arms. I have my track ball, sitting on a concocketed arrangement (not on, but under my desk) where I can comfortably rest my right hand on the chair arm, and it is at the perfect height to also rest on the track ball, so my arm is never suspended – my husband has a similar set up. Actually, what I did is, under my desk to just to my right, I put a stool which once went with my Mom’s sewing machine, then I put an antique, portable typewriter that is in a case on top of that, and the track ball on top of that, and it is the perfect height!!! Probably looks stupid to anyone viewing it, but it makes the track ball the perfect height to the arm on my desk chair, so my “suspended” arm.
I have a friend, who posts auctions and has 1 web site, and she also uses an office chair with arms, but she built an extension build up, on the chair’s arm, and covered it with lamb fleece, so that her whole arm is supported at the level of her track ball. She has severe Rheumatoid arthritis, so this is the only way she can work, and it works perfectly and allows her to work without pain.
I did have one go out, but that was my fault. I am online about 15 hours a day, between working 2 auction sites, and 4 web sites, particularly the web sites that occasionally have to be changed 2 or 3 times a day because of an item selling out, and my need to reorder.
My hand “track ball hand,” occasionally, particularly during the winter gets so cold, last winder I put a heating pad under my track ball, which kept my hand and my track ball warm all winter, till it apparently damaged my track ball, and I had to switch to one of my new back up track balls! MORAL OF THIS STORY IS don’t put your mouse or your “track ball” on a heating pad, it may feel good and work for a time, but it will ultimately burn it out!!!

A mouse with burnout, lol!
I've fried my share of computers, but I have yet to burn up a mouse.
My newest laptop now has a Logitech cordless scroll mouse. I love it! Thought I would get tired switching batteries, but they last almost a month with full time use. Plus I use rechargeables, which have paid for themselves very quickly.
Bit of trivia for ya. Did you know the "mouse" was invented in 1968 by one Mr. Douglas Engelbart. While showing it to a group of 3M Palo Alto computer lab geniuses, they basically said, cute but totally useless.
Luckily Engelbart was smart enough to patent his invention. It took those "geniuses" almost 20 years to realize how useful Engelbart's toy would be.
posted on March 17, 2005 09:07:44 AM newstonecold613 Could be true, but my track ball is only about 5 inches below the top of my desk and I am definitely not small enough to "hang" under my desk. I don't use a "normal" desk, but one which Sam's had a number of years ago, no drawers, basically totally open beneath the desk top, and about 8 feet long in a U shape.
Since we often are up working at 2, or 3 AM, I am probably hanging upside down under the desk and by that time, I just do not know it! What could we possibly be doing at 2 or 3 am – tweaking web pages, learning the latest changes the search engine’s spiders are seeking, updating, we are NEVER at a loss for something to do either on the auction sites we post on, or more important our 4 web sites.
Fortunately, we are both computer junkies, and enjoy our work.
