Here's a new one. 2 weeks ago I opened several emails with slightly off looking subject headers. There was nothing visible in the email. I knew this couldn't be good. Sure enough I then can't sign on to AOL. Get a remote access error message. AOL says bad modem. I get a friend's 17 year old kid who goes into "start up" and finds 4 imbedded programs that will stop your computer cold. Did you know you have the option of checking off which programs you want to start running at startup? By not checking these 4 sub routines the computer now works normally. Read up on script kiddies on google if you don't have a kid to ask about them.

How do you know what the four sub routines are? I know how to check off what I want at start up, but there are some there that you need to start up. I don't know what those are for sure.

When I had trouble with disconnects of my home wireless network I read somewhere in xp help to try disabling all but the essentials at start-up. I now only have 3 boxes checked for start up...the instructions said to add things back slowly to find what the incompatiblity was but I haven't added anything back and everything works swell. Norton's is one of the items I have running at start up.

Thanks, glassgrl. I have XP Home Edition, but have not installed SP2. I've heard conflicting stories on it. I bought a copy of XP Professional and I think I may just install that. I had some serious computer issues last week that took me a day to resolve so naturally, I'm leery about changing the operating system.
