Does anyone know anything about these. I believe that they came from an old Short Hills, NJ home, but am not sure.

Hi cash (may I call you cash?) ...

are those solid brass? VERY nice lookin'~ ... whether they are or not {solid}, we'd say those should be listed as Victorian Eastlake knobs. listed under Antiques/Architecture/Hardware

Sure, Cash works for me

Thanks Marcia (and again for your condolences). They definitely feel solid (and very heavy).

I wasn't sure if they were brass or bronze; do you know how to tell the difference?

You're welcome CashClaude ... (about the condolences too ... that kinda thing is never easy).

I have a hard time myself being positive if something is brass or bronze ... but i HAVE sold those kind of doorknobs before, and I think I maybe have titled and/or worded it as "brass or bronze" explaining further that I wasn't really sure which they were. ...
btw, type

victorian eastlake doorknob*

into advanced search, in order of price high to low ... take a look and see the completed listings also .... they can bring a pretty penny in.

Maybe get some ideas for your 'title' looking at them, too.

Take care,
Marcia/Ohio

Brass or bronze? There's a simple test, but I forget which is which. A magnet will stick to one but not the other. Someone here will know, but you may need to start a new thread asking for the "brass or bronze test."

Brass is usually quite yellow and bronze is more reddish like copper. They look like brass to me.

You may want to point out that there is some verdigris (that green stuff) on the pieces.

"verdigris?"

Kind of like the "aged" pepperoni on Ralphie's pizza in the fridge??

I think that these are more nouveau than victorian.
If they are originals.

I simply called it brass, and listed one pair to see how they do. I still don't have a $1 bid, but I've got 14 watchers

And you probably won't get a bid either. Until the last 15 seconds of the auction. That's when the interior decorators will try to beat each other to death with their wallets. Pour a tall cool one, sit back, and enjoy.

sparks, re "And you probably won't get a bid either. Until the last 15 seconds of the auction. That's when the interior decorators will try to beat each other to death with their wallets. Pour a tall cool one, sit back, and enjoy."

Is it your impression also that this is happening more and more lately? I was accustomed to, on the morning that an auction was going to end, being at a level where I would feel that the auction was guaranteed not to be a disaster. Then, if I got a good pop at the end, it was high fives all around. No pop, and it was at least acceptable. Nowadays, I have auctions at 1/3 to 1/2 of what I was hoping for in the morning, and usually they move along later, but much later... and not always.
