I shipped a large and heavy color laser printer with the toner inside the printer. I've done this before, and the UPS store says that they've done it many times.
Buyer says that toner spilled everywhere, made a mess, laser lens got messed up, etc. Wants me to pay for repairs.
Does this sound right to you? I guess in the future I could pack the toner separately, but I honestly have never heard of this happening before.

Hi Claude:
Yes, it is very possible that the toner has spilled throughout the machine. I am a former Xerox sales agent/owner, and my experience was that sometimes just moving a copier or printer in the back of a moving vehicle could spill toner inside it. Just imagine what it goes through if it is shipped with UPS, FedEx, etc. It's always a good idea to remove the toner, or some machines even have a lock down device inside, before shipping or moving the equipment. It can make an awful mess if you don't sometimes.

The toner should have been removed and packaged separately or not sold with the printer. Take a toner cartridge and move it around a bit. It will leak toner. Up to now, you've been lucky. What are the cost of repairs in comparison to what he paid for the printer?

Live and learn
He said that he thought it would be repaired for less than $75, and it sold for $255. Since it was my own printer, and apparently my own mistake, I will just chalk it up to "tuition." Had it been a consignor's it would have been a bit more painful psychologically, though from a strictly financial standpoint my loss is the same $75. Interesting (to me anyway) psychology.

"toner inside the printer"
first, you[we] should have known better...
second, I should have known better toooooooooo...damn what a mess...
--------------
i dont mean the above to be facetious or presumptive...what happened to you gives rise to the old saying:: "hindsight is 20/20."
-----------------
and, i dont write this to you telling you what you should have done...only to answer your question: "Does this sound right to you?"
ANSWER:::: 'fraid so...
on my screwup, i thought about removing, but then ignorance set in...i.e, i "figured" that its insertion into the printer meant that it would be most secure in that environment - so i left it "as it was."
-------
and yes, it got all over, even the ups driver-[before carton was opened.] and the lens never cleaned completely...i ended up having to replace the machine...
