I've exhausted myself. Even went to Gotheborg and posted there. Still, no one was able to provide much in the way of help. My brother said this is a teapot, but I have my doubts. I think it's a sake pot or bottle. The opening at the top is 1/2" across. Hardly seems big enough for tea. It stands 5-1/2" tall. I can't tell if there are multiple holes at the spout which would point toward teapot. It's plenty dark in there. The hole is too small to look through. I also know it's stoneware and it is signed although part of the signature is worn away. The funny looking character to the right is katagana (phonetic "A" and that's about all I know. Oh, and it's Japanese. You wouldn't believe how tough it was to get a photo of the mark. It's tiny and on one of the elephant's feet.

So, is it a teapot or a sake pot????

I don't know what it is but that is too cool for words. Let me know when you list it, I have a friend that is elephants and pottery that would be all over that one.

No, I'm saying -- I'm merely -- I'm saying what I'm saying. I don't know why I'm always having people say, are you trying to say -- you know what you can do if you want to know what I'm saying is listen to what I'm saying. What I'm saying is what I said ...

I hope to list it tomorrow. It's part of what I'm selling for Ryan. I'm about out of items I'm willing to give up, though. My cabinet is looking naked. Oh well, time to shop again.

Very cool!

I have both in the listing...although I believe it is a teapot, probably for a single person.

Be sure to list that the trunk is up...which is for good luck!

That is so cool! I see it as something totally different though ... Could it be an incense burner?

bizzy - No. There's only a tiny opening at the top. I can't even see how you could brew tea in it. You'd have to brew the tea in another pot and pour it into this one to do that. Kind of makes double work, IMO. I thinks it's pretty cool, too.

I know - it's a BONG!

LOL, glassgrl! It's a sake bong. A new Japanese way to drink sake - suck it through a long hose, hold it in then blow it out toward the person on your right. A new party game!

Cheryl -- The reason why I said "incense" is because of the burn marks around the opening as well as elephant's snout. Perhaps it is an opium pipe?

Cheryl -- If you took a screen (like in a pot pipe -- not that I know anything about that STUFF ...), it would look like a really cool pot pipe!

I think glass is close with a bong, but it is too small for a bong, unless they are doing something over there that we're not aware of ... lol

Could it be for a condiment such as soy sauce or teriyaki ?

I just wanted to see how many hippies we had over here

Quite a few from the looks of it!

My dear 10 year older DH dies when I spurt something out like that in public. Poor dear he was off defending the country in Germany when I was living it up in High School.

My favorite picture I keep over my kitchen sink is of him in grammar school and it was the year I was born! One of my friends said that we should always keep an innocent child picture of our loved ones around for when we get mad at them

Actually, they aren't burn marks. It's part of the stoneware. Think it happened in the firing. Well, it's a mystery elephant. Maybe I should build a story around it. A haunted elephant pot bong. Sometimes in the middle of the night, you'll see smoke rising from the elephant's nose. I swear it isn't me.

What's strange about it is it does not seem to have a handle - is that correct, or am I just not seeing it in the pics? If it doesn't have a handle, I wouldn't think it would be a sake or teapot - my initial thoughts were sake pot. But there would be no safe way of pouring a hot liquid without a handle. I like the bong theory...

Is the opening on top about cork sized? Are there holes in the spout? Maybe a salt shaker?

Great thought on the cork - what about a sesame oil, or other liquid, storage container?

I found out today it is most likely a tea pot. "The incised marks on both sides are Buddhist Dharma wheels- a symbol used in all types of buddhist sects. The symbol with 8 spokes
represents the 8 fold path.

Finding this on a Japanese teapot does make sense as the buddhist monastic establishment is credited with the introduction of tea and
the tea ceremony to japan. This also helps to explain the shape of the teapot itself as the
elephant is representative of many aspects of buddhism and is often found in various teachings."
