I bought a new router (on Ebay) with wireless G and I switched from SMC (which came free with my laptop) to Hawking and I must say I like the Hawking MUCH MUCH better.

1) While you have to wait in line (the service keeps saying you are #whatever in line) the people actually speak ENGLISH!

2) Setting up the WEP security was really easy! I tried to do it with my SMC and it was mind boggling!

Now I'm going to shop for a new wireless card and NewEgg.com has the best prices around.

Glassgirl, you and I are thinking along the same lines. I just bought a wireless card that does A/b/g I sure hope it works with what I want to do. I checked ebay this morning and tonight and saw a card with the router built in. I wonder if that would be easy to set up. Thanks for the info on the wireless card and the online store.

don't forget, you can assign the computer(s) to your MAC i.d. as well

had an interesting experience last week. a "neighbor" across the street came over to COMPLAIN and ask if i knew who penny was - that he used to be able to log on to that wireless connection and now he was blocked from it and had to use a weaker connection. i looked at him and said penny is...my dog. and he was so clueless that he STILL stood there and complained about how he couldn't log on to my wireless connection! all this in a tiny, rural location. gives a person something to think about, when it comes to privacy, if the problem's filtered down this far.

Well, you have a nerve! You stopped providing free Internet access? Shame on you.

Maybe you should rent the encryption key to him for 1/2 of the monthly fee. While you're at it, give him a key to the house and let him get his beers without having to go to the store.

People continue to amaze me; that's why I want to keep on living.

Here's what you need Vintage! Build a HoneyPot!

Build a Honeypot with Old Equipment

If you've elected to upgrade all of your equipment and do not have devices on your network that do not support WPA functionality, you can set up a honeypot to distract would-be intruders if you are in an environment prone to war drivers or neighborhood snoops. A honeypot is a fake target that deters hackers from locating your real network. Take an old 802.11b access point and:

1.
Set the SSID to something different than what you are using in your new WPA capable access point or router.

2.
Use a channel at least 5 channels away from the channel you've set on the new access point or router to avoid interference.

3.
Place it near an outside window.

4.
Plug it in to a power outlet, but don't connect it to your network.

5.
Don't point any of your wireless computers or devices at this device.

You've just built a honeypot. This may engage casual (but not determined) snoops and neighbors. If you live in an area that is densely populated, you may need to experiment with channel settings because you could find that there are not enough available channels to implement this.

Sorry, I've been busy with my "treasures" today. Still working on cleaning the first lamp.

Glass, this is what I saw on ebay,

Let me know what you think.

Great info on setting up a honeypot. I'll keep it in mind when I set up my first one.

glassgrl and cash...oh yeah, i love my neighbor...NOT!

he had a really noisy ATV, too, that kids were riding up and down the road pretty fast, and without any adult supervision. i kept worrying that some of the really small children around here who are always trying to crowd around it would get hit. well, it was smoking and they were too stupid to stop running it...incessantly...up and down the road...up and down...up and down...well, you get the drift!

my husband commented the other day that they were going to ruin it. he came in with a big smile on his face yesterday afternoon...they'd burnt up all the oil, ruined the engine, and had come to ask if they could BORROW OUR TOOLS to work on it!!! not. i always like looking out my office windows at flowers i planted, but the view was extra-special yesterday...they were standing around the deceased and dissected ATV across the street, parts everywhere, no tools...in the rain. it's still raining today and all the parts are still laying out there in the rain.

Those ATVs have a miserable safety record... and environmental record.

There are some people (of all ages) who think that louder is "funner." There's a special circle of hell reserved for them
