I know what you mean about giving stuff away. I was amazed to see what kind of cars were driving up to pick up their freebies. I did the same thing. Put an ad in CL with a nominal fee and when people came up who were really in need, I just gave it to them.

You are all too funny.

Jack, that is why they are driving Mercedes and such, cause they are dumpster divers at heart so that they can afford to drive their cars.

I see them always at Big Lots near my home. Lots of mercedes, jags, BMW and more.

After the last free pile disaster , this is what I did at my last garage sale. I separated all the stuff into a "Free Pile" over on the other side of the drive way. When a car drove up with a bunch of kids or just looked needy. Even if they have a nice car, sometimes they are still needy. You can tell. I just pointed to the free pile and handed them a paper grocery bag. Then whispered in their ear to take what they want.

Then we have the packrats or the garbage takers that take anything as long as it's free. You know the type, they look like , well, you know what, their car or truck is loaded with, well, you know what. Those I try to discourage. BUT . . IF they want to take my C$#P, fine.

Then we have the ladies and gentlemen dressed to go to the "club" Diamonds dripping off the wrists, neck and hands, stepping out of their brand new mercedes or Lexus and want everything for nothing. For those, they get a nice "discount" at my free pile.

I have so much fun at my garage sales. Too bad it takes so much work.

Jack darlin' ... you have every right to make the business decision to 'TAKE ALL $200' in light of the fact that trying the 'free, take what you want' ended up with them trashing your place ...

lol, that reminds me of a an "in" thing my teenage son just told me about last week ... he said to me, you know the "WTF" that is used a lot in computer shorthand slang? ... i says, "yeah" ... he said him and his friends came across a cartoonish video online where the characters in it actually SAY "doubleyew tee eff", to get their point across ... so now him and his friends use that 'phrase' ... LOL ... "hey! doubleyew tee eff!?!" ...

I would love to be a fly on the wall and watch em go through the pile. I keep picturing all those brides during the Filene's basement wedding dress sale - grabbing and pushing.

The freecycle thing,,,,thanks but my hopes were to get a BUYER after sampling the FREEEEEE stuff for the clothes. If no one has any intention of paying for these like new/new in many cases clothes, then off to the dump,,,,,and then of course I just tell the other swapmeeters, sorry, take yours to the dump yourself......Shrugging my shoulders, I tried...Beleive me, others are going to say Goodwill and all that, these are business people they have no time to keep this stuff for pick up from charities, DUMP! and they are NOT going to spend gas delivering it either,,.....Me too.....Dump it.. TONS,, Most of us know what REALLY happens to Donated stuff anyway. The truely needy will NEVER see it.....

We have had threads before RE: Charity groups......

edit: and by the way it's not Free to dump. $40 per ton....my trucks can easily carry 3-4 tons,,,,,,And I do most weekends,,,,,Dump fees are just part of being a swapmeeter......part of doing business....

Re RE edit, and most you never think of this, Even those charities they TOO take millions of TON to the DUMP every day......

So you would think they (charities)would seperate metal and wood and all those recylclables, right? WRONG!!!!! they too are a Business,,,,,it all goes in ONE Big Dumpster truck,,,,,and off to the DUMP......and they are NOT exempt from Dump fees either.....they pay just like anyone else,, and THEN the DUMP people who CHARGED you to DUMP, THEY pull it all in 15 directions.

it ALL goes down certain chains......

Jack...Give them to a charity. Get a receipt. Your accountant can have a field day with those receipts at tax time. Save you some big bucks. What the charity can't use, let them haul to the dump and pony up the $40.00 plus the gas to get there. It doesn't have to be a nationally advertised charity such as Goodwill, Salvation Army, etc. It can be a local battered women's shelter, a church auxillary, or an overseas relief effort. These people will make sure the clothes get to whoever needs them.
