Were there any ashes in it when you bought it? Could be a potpourri container that is missing the lid?

HI It may well be the bottom of a kerosene lamp. The burner would screw into the piece you have. Does it have any mark? I had a Minton bottom urn one time that worked like that It was a kero lamp...

brim my best suggestion is to see if you can find a burner that fits it and a chimney. It probably had a shade that slipped down onto the chimney. It is very good looking and I know it would market for more $$ that way than as is. AND after all $$ is what we're after..

There are no threads in the top opening of the piece, just a shelf to sit a lid on. How would you hold a burner in there?
