I just looked at an email in my spam filter and it purports, and looks like, an email from RedCross.org, seeking donations. It was mentioned this week on the news that people should be wary of email links because of the scam artists that can look real and mask that it's money they're attempting to steal.

Anyway, is there a way any of you can tell by these headers, if it is scam or real?

Marcia - the Red Cross has stated that they do NOT send out emails! The scams that are out there look VERY real and even send you to the REAL Red Cross site after you make your "donation" (and give them all your personal information). They have found these originating in Brazil and sadly, in the US.

Marcia,

What Neglus said plus the very first line of the e'mail they sent you is a dead give-away:

Return-Path: <[email protected]>

the e'mail doesn't originate in the U.S. with the "is" for the country. i think that's indonesia, not positive. it's a scam. unfortunately!

wow, thanks both of you ... I did assume it was a scam from the get-go (one reason being that I already did a donation AT the redcross website), but I don't know how to read the parse of the headers .....

AND is there an internet "fraud" site I should forward it to? ...

Marcia... back from a long, 'warm', not very fruitful yard sale. LOL ...

Wow ... got another email now that doesn't pretend to be from RedCross, but *does* have an incidental hotlink to 'Donate to Red Cross for Katrina Victims' and when I held my cursor over the link it goes to someone's yahoo store ... strange.

Marcia,

as i've watched the hurricane coverage, i recall hearing several news reports that the FBI is actively pursueing the hurricane Katrina fraudsters, but i can't give you a link. maybe a search of CNN or Fox would turn up a link for you if you want it?
