SOMEONE working at ebay amazed the heck out of me just now.

About a week ago, I'd received an email from a guy who said he was the brother of one of my buyer's and that his sister (the buyer) was in a bad car accident the night before, and was in ICU; he wondered if I could let this sale go, without giving her account a black mark on ebay.

I checked her bidding history (her FB was "1" ) and she had won many many items in the previous 30 days, plus still held high bidder spot on a handful of items that hadn't ended yet.

Well, I just kept an eye on her bidder ID name to make sure she wasn't still placing bids, and she was not. She really was "off" ebay. (It's sad we have to be so suspicious).

So, this morning, I filed for unpaid item dispute, checked off "mutual agree to not transact", reason "other", and the page that came up said ebay would send email to buyer and if they confirmed this is true, I will receive my FVF refund, or if they do not 'confirm' within 7 days, I can apply to get the FVF refund after that time.

So, I figured I'd just have to wait 7 days, but, I went back into the UPI area and viewed my new 'dispute' and THERE, it gave a box where I could type in some kind of message, so I wrote "This buyers brother has contacted us, that she was in bad accident and is in ICU at her local hospital." ... then i hit 'enter', and it said my message was recorded.

I could not believe my email-box-eyes just now, like less than an hour after I did all this, that said that ebay has closed this dispute and released all obligations from both of us, and instantly showed my FVF granted.

... I gotta think that it is becuase of that later explanation I decided to put in there; I feel some ebay employee read that and pushed a quick magic button.

Could it have been that the buyer's brother confirmed the "mutually agreed" classification and that would have given you credit immediately?

well, I don't "think" so; I think when I've done this sort of thing in the past, that ebay denotes in their email to me that the customer 'agreed' to what I was saying.

That happened to me twice. In less than 1/2 hour I recieved notice from Ebay the mutual agreement was OK.
One buyer inserted a message and the other nothing. I think they were just relieved to sign off on a mutual agreement. Who knows!

That is exactly what happened except it wasn't the brother responding, it was the actual person. You got scammed That is exactly what this person wanted you to do. Relieve them of their obligation. You should have filed not with the mutual but the person has not paid reason. Once they responded, it made your claim available to you. But you got lucky. They could have screwed you too. If they clicked the not acceptable box, then you would have been stuck with the FVF's too.
