I sometimes do my ebay mailings at a small privately owned contract Postal Substation. As I understand it the USPS pays this business some amount of money to operate the substation. The Substation has PO Boxes and does most regular Post Office functions charging the same prices as the regular Post Office they also operate as an agency for UPS and Fedex I think. Here is the insanity part a few weeks ago the postal meters were removed from the facilty and the workers now have to put actual stamps on all of you packages! They still have the 15 year old computers hooked up to the electronic scales that determine postage but they can no longer print out postage they have to use stamps! I have asked a few times and told it was due to postal regulations and they had no choice in the matter! Has anyone else run into this. It seems so crazy. I dont bring large mailings to this facility but even for a few packages this just seems too nuts!

That certainly seems like taking a step backwards (though I am sure stamp collectors love it!) - In my years of post office experience, even if you're right, if they think they are right, it is really difficult without a lot of work to resolve the issue. I guess you have to decide how much it is worth it to you. For me personally, I now do my own postage printing at home, and just use the post office as a place to drop off packages.

Sounds like they are on there way out of business and could not pay their meter bill.

Why mess with them go to www.stamp.com you get a free scale and you can print your own postage and the mailman picks them up at your home. I never go to the post office. It cost a monthly fee but if you send a lot of packages you'll save that much on fuel alone.

I don't ever go to the PO anymore. All of my sales are bulky, usually china so I print all of my postage through PayPal (Priority Mail) & the mailperson picks it up at my mail box. I order a roll of stamps online & the mail person delivers them in less than 48 hrs. I give her a check & thats it.\

I still go to a Post Office where you tie your horse out front. They are stamps on everything. I have never had any problems,I go by there everyday anyhow. If they are busy they just write the postage amounts on everything and put them aside and do them later.

So putting on stamps instead of a postal meter label. Is this really a problem big enough to go out of your way to the main PO?
