Flaking on a Hurrricane Katrina Red Cross Charity Auction?
I have two unpaid for auctions right now ~ over ten days ~ both with proceeds going to Red Cross.
Do you find that as distasteful as I do?
Why did and pretend that you are trying to help and then flake out?
Are these people a lower breed of scum than typical deadbeats or do you think they are part of the same species?
(fyi, one has 18 fb so he is not a total newbie!)
somethings I will never understand......

That's pretty cruddy! I wonder how many people pledged directly to the Red Cross then didn't fulfill the donation?

I hate to be bitter but I learned this lesson when I ran 9-11 charity auctions.
At the time, there was no MissionFish or anything of the sort ~ it was an eBaY promotion and in order for the funds to get to the 9-11 fund, the final bid HAD TO be paid via PayPal.
I ended up with a nasty neg from a bidder who was pizzed about my only taking PayPal.
grrrr!
that was eBaY's rule, not mine!
so much for live and learn
*sigh*
I still try to get these charities a buck or two when I can!

I find it very flakey that you are giving it to the Red Cross. Those crooks don't even give half of the procedes to where they need to go. The rest lines their pockets.

Give it to the Salvation Army. A much better organization than the Red Cross.

stone,

i can't stand the red cross either. might be because there were stories handed down in my family about how when some family members were serving overseas in wwii and were in battle zones, the red cross still charged them for a cup of coffee...

last report i got from a friend in mississippi in an area hit by katrina, they were still nowhere to be seen there either.

Stone,
At least they only line their pockets with half the money. If you want to support a group of real crooks, donate to Goodwill. They keep it all.

I had that happen after 9/11. Auctioned off a good piece of Roseville to donate, only to have it end in a NPB and retaliatory neg for me.
I learned though. For Katrina, I donated out of pocket. Sometimes I'm thankful for the a**holes of the world, they keep me on my toes.

I have a friend just North of New Orlens who still hasn't seen FEMA, but the Red Cross is there. I gave to Salvation Army, too.
Mostly sending checks ~ I hate that MissionFish takes a piece, but sending goods to the area is pointless unless you are going to drive it in and hand it out yourself (was able to do that for Hurricane Andrew).
Selling off some dead stock ~ useless to me and raises funds for them.

I don't believe I have seen ONE promotion to GIVE to the Goodwill for the victims. They don't seem to need any Special Circumstances Drive to get the goods and turn them into 100% PROFIT for them. Guy at the swap just the other menetioned Goodwill we conversed, he needed HELP! Has a Family, they told him to go to a Church and seek the Help he needed...Thanks Goodwilly...Your Great! Never Give anything but your junk, to the Goodwill for FREE pick up...NEVER CASH!

And OH! NEVER give ANYTHING to the Disabled American Vetrans Organization either. That Private enterprise outfit merely pays yearly Royalties to the DAV to USE that Name on their storfront. I called The San Diego HQ once and got the REAL Story.

Quick summasation,,,,(at the checkstand) Do you give a discount to DV's, No , sorry, only seniors, 10% on Fridays. Please move along Sir there is a LONG line of buyers behind you...But, Sir NO,,Please move on.

100% profit....minus the meager Royalty.

My vote for charitable contributions - Habitat for Humanity. They will be going in to build much needed housing.

If you really want to give to a worthwhile charity that is doing some good, give to one of the organizations that is rescueing the abandoned pets and reuniting them with their owners. Glassgrl has the names of some very reputable and above board organizations.
