Just sold a Halloween costume type item and shipped it as soon as I got payment at the winners request, as she needed it for a party.
She received it Monday and wrote that the item had a very strong musky smell and she could not wear it and was returning it. As an ex-smoker I don't trust me nose so I normally have my husband smell everything before I ship, which of course I didn't do in this case.
I told her to return it for a full refund with shipping.
It arrived yesterday and I had my husband and my neighbor do the smell test and there is no odor at all. So I checked her bidding history and she bid and won another like item (different color) the night before she received mine.
Now I'm thinking that I should not refund the shipping but I told her I would. I'm not too happy about refunding at all to tell the truth.
I can resale the item later but it's too late for Halloween and I may not get as much money next time. Probably to late to do a 2nd chance offer too.
I really don't know what to do at this point.

I'd be tempted to state invalid reason for refund, since item has no faults and bidder is trying to cancel the transaction because they just won a similar item. Bidder will need to send additional postage to send item back, otherwise they aren't entitled to have shipping refunded.
Of course, the easiest thing to do would be to give the full refund, but it is a matter of principle since the buyer wasn't honest.

some sellers have a 15% restocking fee if the reason for return is buyer remorse/
You can tell her what you just told us,that there is no smoke odor and it is too late to offer it to someone else and you have to wait till next season to sell it.

For the future, you can always state that items will be examined and if found to be defective as stated, then refund will be issued.

I guess I'll just refund what she paid - if she says anything - she better be ready for my reply. I won't be so quick to offer a refund in the future.

I refunded without saying a word.
Then I got FB from her. The next day I got an email from her asking for positive FB from me??? Well what to do now?

I had a similar situation - they left positive then it was my turn. Felt like blowing them out of the water with a wicked neg. I held my tongue and waited until the sting of the refund ($200) has faded to try to be fair.
Still waiting for that sting to fade so I haven't left it yet. But on the other hand, this return was somewhat valid. (editted to add, my return situation that is).
What about a neutral stating the issue to warn other sellers that she has done this.
"bogus return for 'smell' when buyer actually bought another item"

I would just politely e-mail her & say there wasn't any musky scent when you received it back, thanks for her feedback, but given the circumstances you will not be leaving any feedback at all. Then there's no fight & hopefully next time you go to sell it you will make out ok. Darned inconvenience, but this stuff happens from time to time on eBay, just the way it goes.
