I am a northern girl - have not really even been in the South except Florida (and I am told that doesn't count). Does anyone have a recipe for fried green tomatoes? I rescued a bunch of green ones before a hard frost - now what? TIA

Here's one for starters:
Cut green tomatoes in 1/2 inch slices, salt and dredge in flour. Fry in small amount of grease until brown.
Be careful not to burn them.
Some dip in egg before the flour.
They are a little too sour me so I use almost ripe tomatoes, but when all I have is green I have to add a little sugar.

I won't laugh, chuckling though cause I LOVE fried green tomatoes and I'm in California!
I use bisquick flour and lightly fry them in olive oil. Just over a med to med-high heat until they form a bit of a crust; I use a touch of garlic salt while they're frying. Put a lid on them and watch for a bit. Ummmmmm good!
My husband hates them but I think they're wonderful! He planted 37 tomatoe plants this year so we had plenty, - red, yellow, green whatever. We're down to just a few left but I think I'll steal a few green ones for the last hurrah!
Good luck and good eating!

Hi Neglus,
There is a dozen ways to cook fried tomatoes.
Like Mjane said, slice them in 1/2 inch slices. I prefer to dip mine in egg or milk before dredging. That helps keep the batter from frying off in the pan.
I also prefer mine lightly crunchy, so I use a half and half mix of flour and cornmeal. Salt and pepper the mix and stir well. This keeps the batter from tasting bland.
You can mix it in a bowl or a ziplock bag. Quartz size bag should be enough for a good serving of 'maters. Or mix enough to cover a standard dinner plate about 1/2 inch deep.
If you have one, use an iron skillet. Needs to be good and hot. Also use bacon drippings if you have them. Fry up about 1 pound of thick bacon and you should enough grease left over to do perfect tomatoes.
You don't want to deep fry them, but you do want enough grease in the pan to do more than toast them.
Good luck and let us know how they turned out.
(Sorry, but when cooking southern food, we rarely use standard measurements. Since we learn to cook by watching our Grandmas, its just a pinch of this or a handfull of that)

LtRay,
Corn meal added & bacon drippings, THAT sounds wonderful.
I have a few medium green tomatoes that will not ripen & I'm going to fry them that way.
I like them crunchy too.

mcjane has it right on!! The real secret is the bacon drippings as she calls it. Back in Iowa it was fried with the bacon. OMG, I haven't had fried gree tomatos for at least 50 year. Can't get them out here in LALA Land.

I haven't made these for years! My grandparents were from Indiana and my grandmother would fry about a pound of bacon, then slice up the tomatoes, dip them in beaten egg, dredge them in flour and season with salt, pepper and garlic powder. After the tomatoes were fried, she would make gravy out of some of the drippings, then layer a fresh "out of the oven" biscuit, a fried green tomato or two and top it off with gravy. Brings back memories...

I am even more "northern", Canada! Here we are always left with green tomatoes because we usually get frost before they all ripen. I had some for my supper just last night. I don't even dredge mine, just fry up my bacon, and then fry them in the drippings sprinkled with salt and pepper. I love them!

I don't have a recipe for them but let me tell you that is by far one of the BEST movies I have ever seen in my entire life.
I watched it with my 10 year old a few months ago and she said that was the best big person movie she's ever seen!
I'll have to watch it again now!

I really love the movie also, Helga - makes me want to rent it to watch it one more time! I recently watched the Notebook - which reminded me alot of Fried Green Tomatoes - just in how it was set up and how much I like it. May be a good one to rent also.
Now if you'll excuse me, I'm quite hungry after reading this thread!

I'm not laughing I'm drooling!!
Being a GRIT (girl raised in the south) myself these are delicious.
LtRay is correct the secret is the iron skillet and bacon grease. Don't limit yourself to 'maters. Okra, squash, zuccini, eggplant...yum
The movie was real good. I also recommend the book by Fannie Flagg. All of her books are good and entertaining with that southern flare and humor. She has an excellent cookbook based on the Whistle Stop Cafe that her Aunt owned and the movie was based.
