I have been having problems with my computer and am pretty pc illiterate. It keeps freezing and I have to keep restarting it. Also, when I do, a box pops up and says my windows configuration is invalid to run windows setup program to stop this. And when I do restart it takes forever for my stuff on the bottomto show up so I can go somewhere. I put the floppy disc in but no box pops up, where do I go to bring this box up? I would appreciate any help. I guess it is time for a new one it,s obsolete but, that isn,t in the funds right now soooo. Also, a Mccaffee box has started to appear like every other day and says I need to restart my pc to install update where it used to just tell me it had updated and continue what I am doing. Anyone know if this is part of my own problem or is Macaffee now doing this? Sorry if this is too much information!!!!!!

Did you try disk clean up or disk defrag?
Click programs, accessories, system tools,
clean disk follow directions in the box.

It almost sounds like you may have shut down your computer during a McAfee update. You may have to log onto their site and manually update your AV program, then run a complete scan to eliminate the possibility of a virus. Take the results with a grain of salt and log onto Trendmicro.com and let their housecall function scan your system for viruses. Be sure to do the usuual things first, such as clearing your cache and deleting your cookies.

What version of windows are you running?
If it's XP do a restore.
To a date prior to the problem.

right click on your Internet Explorer Icon on your desk top and then click properties...under the general tab you'll see delete cookies and delete files about half way down...it's safe to do both

I would also download and run Ad-aware...that will clean up all kinds of things that really slow computers down to a crawl, like spy ware
http://www.lavasoftusa.com/software/adaware/
My husband said it sounds like you might have a over heating problem,so if cleaning and spy removal doesn't help you should have someone look at your fans inside the computer they could be clogged up with dust or have just stopped working altogether

lol babs we have all tried them and have never had any problems with either program. There are alot of programs that are not safe but pretty much anything C-net has to offer is safe as safe can get. I think Tom gave us the PCpitstop link and it's safe I've done it probably 5 or 6 times .Glassgirl will come along and help some I'm sure ,she has all kinds of help for computer problems .Also BitDefender and Trend are the best free on-line scans for viruses if you feel your MacAffee is missing a possible virus

You should also download spybot seek & destroy and spyware blaster.

Hello,
All the above is excellent advice and you should do them. That said remember that a computer is like a baby, when it is sick it don't tell you what is wrong very well.
I once had a computer overheating which was telling me all sorts of strange stuff. A really dirty computer can do very strange stuff as well a froze chip fan etc. Usually when you are at that stang is time for a new one. Hope it went well. David

Also Win 98 and McCaffy have some compatibility issues. When I have Win 98 I finally went to Norton. McCaffy uses shared files so be careful in deleting (If you do) However if you have had it a while probably not the issue. David

Babs - I have Macaffee and this past week I have noticed a increase in installations too. It doesn't always require me to shut down.

My experience with CrapAfee & WIN98 was NOT a happy one -- I had a GATEWAY back then, & they basically told me that CrapAfee & WIN98 were incompatable & to install NORTON (after a COMPLETE UNINSTALL of CrapAfee) -- worked like a charm ever after...

I will never ever buy Norton or McAfee again. I would go with Avast every time. They have an excellent FREE program but also a paid edition - which I would buy over the others.
