About to submit a listing and this gets appended to the end of it:

Attention Sellers:
Verify Your Phone Number
To help provide a safe trading environment, eBay members need to have a valid phone number on file. Please work with us to verify or update and verify your phone number by following a few, easy steps. We care about your privacy and encourage you to learn more.
1. Receive an automated call at the the phone number we have on file for you.
2. Remember the PIN (Personal Identification Number) you receive during the call.
3. Return to eBay and enter the PIN.

I, of course, do have a valid phone number on file. Oh, and I can't list any more until I agree to go through this procedure.
I *think* I know what's going on here, but just checking.

Ummmm...I wonder if they gave thought to the idea that some sellers may be on dialup and have that same number on file? What happens then? Do you sign off, wait for the call, and then sign back on and try again to list, only to get the same message? The only reason I can see they would do this is if someone turned you in for having an invalid phone # on file. BTW, welcome back Fluffy.

I guess somebody might be listing auctions over a dial-up, but I think I'd rather have hot pokers shoved in my eyes. It's bad enough at US broadband speeds.

It's just you, Fluffy. The feeBay hind brain finally got through to the fore brain and they figured out who that was outside their HQ with a sign. Expect a call, probably Monday. Early.

One of the larger foreheads at eBay thought of that eventuality, probably while munching a designer bagel at Noah's down on the corner.
You have the option of having the machine call you immediately OR you can have it delay one minute so you can get off your dialup connection.
One minute. Fat lot of good that does you if you're traveling when this happens. Once upon a time it appeared that eBay selling was an ideal moneymaker for people who like to gypsy about in their mobile homes or VW vans. Now it's looking more and more like you'll be forced to have a fixed base of operations (FBO for you pilots out there).

I told them who it was. But you're right; it's probably taken this long to sink in.

I just printed a shipping label at PayPal.
They made me enter a phone # before it would print, even though it said phone # is only required on international shipments.
This wasn't.

Dad...That's simple. Sellers with telephones are considered affluent, and will be assessed an extra 1 1/2% fee on all transactions. OTOH, sellers without telephones will be suspended by Ebay. It's part of their new "Gotcha" initiative.
