I received an ask a seller a question through ebay's crappy system. I always like the personal touch being able to contact the potential buyer directly. It has proven to be very effective in receiving bids from these people. Look at what ebay has done now.

eBay sent this message on behalf of an eBay member via My Messages.

And here is the reply address that ebay sends.

[email protected]

Ebay has shot themselves in the foot with this one.

From now on, absolutely no questions will be answered unless asked directly to my e-mail.

I received the following message thru my regular email address. Since there was no auction number or item discription, it raised a red flag. I checked my mail on my home page and there was no message sent thru ebay's system. Then checked the buyer's auctions, and he had been booted.

New phishing ploy

I liked the freedom of having their email, but there are benefits to the new way as well.

It's getting to the point anymore when half my emails don't get through because of the buyers spam filters. By using eBay's system, you can avoid that, or at least show that you've answered the question.

As someone else said on another post, if you get a question, go over to the actual eBay auction page, if a question has actually been asked then it will show that at the top of the auction, and you can safely answer it from that link, your answer will appear on the auction listing if you want, or will be returned directly to the person asking the question.

Max - I just got the same message from Michael Douglas. I check my ebay messages and it was not there so won't reply. "I'm still waiting the package to arrive What happened? Please mail me ASAP or I will report you to ebay."

ol' rivernick is still at it. His ebay ID has been on a lot of phishing 'inquiries'.

I received an email "ask the seller a question" and I was able to hit the reply button and send him a direct reply, he got the email.

I always use the reply through my email server not through ebay, I havnt seen any problems and I have always been doing it this way.

I believe the reason you can directly email some and not other ebay users via your email account is that when the buyer ask using the ask seller a question they have the option to hide email address. If they hide it you get the [email protected] and if they don't check the box you get the email address and can respond directly to them via your email box, thereby bypassing ebay.

I think your right Mike
it has happened to me yesterday I guess its a choice given to the person asking the question and not ebay doing it.

but tonimar, you are are only asking for trouble if you continue to just hit that 'reply' button contained within the email ... you have "always been doing it this way", well the scammers have figured out that a lot sellers still do it "this way" and they will be sending you to a link that will get you trouble. ... nowadays you should always go to your 'my ebay'/'messages' to see if it really came through ebay or not.
