For Christmas, I'm going to buy either an xbox or playstation 2 for my SO and daughter. Which one is better? Is it safe to purchase something like this on Ebay, or am I better off purchasing it from a store? Thanks!

Diane,

My kids are buzzing more about Xbox, but they know in their hearts that their mother will probably buy them both eventually; they're making noises about the order of purchase

I adore my wife, but she really spoils the tykes.

My son, the brand new teen and gamer says this: He likes Playstation 2 better for one reason: the games are very expensive for the Xbox. He said that the "cool" games are available for the PS2.

I like games that I cam play with him. Gives us something to do together. I don't like alot of fghting in games maybe because I am not very good at it or visa versa. I like the games that have puzzles in them. He has one that I like alot that we play together. Dark Alliance. There is another one that can be played alone (Don't know if you can play it together or not) has puzzles in it is great. I It has disney characters in it. It's called kingdom hearts.

Definitly get Xbox, superior graphics and easily networkable to play multi-player games over your home network. Halo and Halo 2 are great games to start with. Just my opinion.

Are you asking for the new 360 or the current version? For the ones out now there are benefits to each. I would look to see what types of games I would want to purchase. Xbox has a few games Playstation doesn't and vice versa but for the most part they have the same games available. The graphics are better for Xbox but you have to be a die hard gamer to really care about the difference that will make. Go to Best Buy and try out the controllers, play a few games , and check out the new releases that will be out. After all that, toss a coin

Wait to buy, if you can. When the new systems hit the market (XBOX 360, etc), it will drive down prices of the system and the games dramatically.

I'd go with tOMWiii's advice. Pick up an old Atari 2600. Those game are the most playable, if you don't care about fancy graphics.

The only game I was any good at was:

Pong

Personally, I think video games went downhill ever since its release...

We have both. DH likes the XBox the best, because the controller fits his hands better. It's too large for my hands, and my hands are average-sized.

The PS2 controller is more comfortable for me, so that might be a consideration since you have a daughter.

Games for the PS2 seem to be more readily available, and used games are a bit cheaper, generally speaking.

We've been happy with both systems, and would find it hard to choose between them, but if we HAD to, we'd keep the PS2.

An excellent alternative, and much less expensive, would be a library card.

The newer Xboxes have smaller controllers than the original.

Cool -- I didn't know that. The year the XBox came out, I had DH's pre-ordered so that he'd get it by Christmas. I'll have to see if the smaller controllers are available separately, because the original one is too large for me.

Thanks!

I'm a video game junkie and the Xbox is light years better than PS2. Better games, better graphics, the ability to play games live over the internet against other players, etc. You can get either system for about the same price but if I had to choose one, it'd be Xbox.

Yes you can get them seperatly. They are not only smaller but the buttons are situated in a better position. They are much easier to use.

I strongly suggest NEITHER this year. Xbox is coming out with a new system in a week or so. Playstation is coming out with a new one this spring. If you don't get the new one, you are buying a dead system. new games will become rarer and rarer until there is nothing new and they suffer the shame and ridicule of their peers for being children of someone so completely behind the times that they have such outdated technology.

If you wait until NEXT xmas, you will know which system is more popular, you will know which has better and more appropriate games and you will be considered ULTRA COOL (except to your face, where you will always be treated like a dork... even when handing over cash and car keys).

If you HAVE to get it this year. Get the NEW xbox... at least then you've got a running shot at being cool at sometime in the future. Out here, they run $50 down now, $350 more when they come out next week (month?). Whatever
