As the saying goes, It's not over till the fat lady sings. And the tropical storm season is still with us. Tropical depression 27 just formed in the Carribean, near Puerto Rico. It could become tropical storm Gamma by tomorrow. At least two models are giving it a chance to reach hurricane strength. The first 3 or 4 track maps will not be accurate until the NHC gets a handle on this storm.

Ltray...This one kind of sneaked up. This morning, it was calm in the Atlantic. I saw later wher there was a low pressure system that evolved from a tropical wave, but I sure didn't expect anything to come of it till tomorrow. Looks like mother nature is in a hurry to squeeze another one in before the season ends.

That is SOME fat lady! Sparkz, I think you and my husband must have been separated at birth. He's SO interested in weather and weather maps, etc., and just got himself a really dandy weather station. When we lived in Utah, he kept high and low temperature records for 18 years - faithfully. I suppose in another life he'd have been a TV weatherman.

Roadsmith...Glad to hear hubby got a weather station. You need it up there. Surprisingly, you can't get reliable information from the NWS for Idyllwild. Their observations are made at either Anza or Palm Springs. The 88 degree reading NWS had for you today is nowhere near the 62 degree actual temperature. There is a private weather station in Pine Cove on Marion Ridge Dr. that provides readings to an independent weather network, but NWS won't use it.
Niel and Ladyjewells...Ironically, there is a series of atmospheric conditions over Florida right now that is actually pushing this latest system toward the west and keeping it away from you. If it survives the next 24 hours and makes it into the gulf, it looks like someone other than you Floridans will be biting the bullet on this one.

"there is a series of atmospheric conditions over Florida right now "
YEP, its called a COLD (brrrr) Front. Supposed to be here soon and we'll see our gorgeous mid 70's drop into the 50's.
The way that storm is tracking I doubt it will get past tropical storm status or even make it into the Gulf. But ya never know...

TD27 has lost it's circulation and is fizzling out. The remnants are expected to be absorbed by a developing low pressure system in the Carribean. While TD27 is no longer much of a threat to develop further on it's own, the low pressure system will have a greater chance to develop in the near future. This same scenario occurred once earlier this summer, and gave birth to a hurricane. The hurricane was Katrina. The good news here is that this late in the season, it's getting extremely more difficult for a tropical storm to form. One or two more weeks and the threat should be over till next summer.

Niel...There was a special alert this morning that this might happen. I was gone most of the day and just found out about this. There is widespread disagreement among the models as to what this will do. A couple show Gamma heading to Florida following the track on the above map. A couple show it dissapating in 72 hours. A few others are in the process of flipping a coin to arrive at a prediction. Under normal circumstances, this one would be pretty easy to figure out, but this storm is encountering a very hostile envionment trying to develop, and it's a little too soon for them to issue a high confidence forecast. Even though it shows the advisory as being #12, it's really only #1 for the new storm. They are continuing the advisories from TD27 which fizzled a couple of days ago. The remnants merged with a developing low pressure system to become TS Gamma. Only one model shows it as reaching Florida as a hurricane. The others show it not progressing beyond the tropical storm stage.

I know Niel is probably en route to St. Augustine tonight and won't see this, but the latest NHC forecast shows Gamma missing Florida. Instead, it looks like Cuba is going to eat this one. One more bullet Ralphie managed to dodge. Hopefully this will be the last tropical storm threat till next season.
