I sent out a NPB notice last week. The buyer came back with...I paid you...the bank said the check cleared.
I assured him I had NOT been paid and asked him what signature was on the check and which bank the check cleared thru and what account number was on the check.
Turns out my name is signed but it went thru a bank in town that I don't bank at. Their bank can't make out the account number.
I told them they may want to contact their bank and see if they can reverse the check.
We're not talking about a lot of money probably less then $10.00.
Did I give the correct advice? What else would you suggest to them?

Their bank may want to know who is attempting to deposit a check which does not belong to him?

You did right, and are protecting yourself and the buyer. It's bank fraud and most likely mail theft too, as it looks like your mail has been misdelivered and opened by a neighbor or someone a few streets down at the same street number. Happens all the time especially when the temporary mail carriers are employed around Xmas...

They should call the trust and safty department of the bank that cashed the check, and notify them that the name was forged. They should be able to track who cashed the check even though the account number may not be entirely visable, and be able to reverse the transaction.
