Tropical storm Epsilon formed in the Atlantic this morning. Presently, it's headed directly for the East Coast of the U.S., but is predicted to turn north and then East, away from the U.S. by Thursday, so it shouldn't pose a threat to the U.S. What is particularly disturbing about this one and the two before it is how rapidly they formed from nothing to powerful tropical storms almost without warning. The end of the Atlantic storm season in now only hours away. The fat lady is supposed to sing at midnight (EST) tomorrow night.

At 10:00PM EST, Epsilon was still a tropical storm with maximum sustained winds of 70 mph, which is 4 mph short of hurricane strength. Here's a quote from the 10:00 PM NHC update:
EPSILON IS CURRENTLY OVER 24C SEA SURFACE TEMPERATURES...AND ANY
INCREASE IN ORGANIZATION WOULD ALLOW IT TO BECOME A HURRICANE.
HOWEVER...THE OUTFLOW HAS DECREASED AS WESTERLY SHEAR STARTS
AFFECTING THE SYSTEM...AND THE WINDOW OF OPPORTUNITY FOR
STRENGTHENING SHOULD CLOSE IN 12-24 HR.
It is now past midnight on the east coast, and the 2005 hurricane season is officially over. We'll probably have to wait till tomorrow to see if Epsilon became the 14th hurricane of the season between 10:00 PM and midnight. In any event, it's been a violent season. Hope next year is a little milder.

Epsilon finally was upgraded to a category 1 hurricane early this morning. It will get into the record books but nothing more is expected of it. It is still projected to track east away from the U.S., and begin to weaken later tonight and eventually dissapate over cool water.
