Did I miss the announcement about a new security feature eBay was implementing?

Today, I received an ask seller question from a potential buyer. They had an item in their watch list and failed to bid on it. I plan on relisting it.

The question came through eBay's ask seller question. When I responded, eBay presented a new page requiring me to enter numbers in the little jumbled box.

Ebay stated on that page:

In our ongoing efforts to make eBay as safe as possible, we have added this security precaution to prevent inappropriate use of our site. This isn't your password and won't change your account information.
Please enter the numbers shown below and click Continue.

I believe this is not a phising sceme since it didn't require my user name and password and came through the eBay Ask Seller question format.

Did I miss the announcement? I can't find it right now and it did take me off guard.

That happened to me a couple of times. Fluffy explained it, but I can't remember her explanation in detail. Something about too many attempts to log into your account. . .Fluffy, correct me if I'm wrong.

I'll be interested in seeing what fluffy says. Although I had not accessed my account prior to receiving and responding to the request. I have had several ask seller questions since Sunday (bids are good this week) and didn't have to jump through the jumbled letter hoop.

Hope to hear from others. Thanks for responding Cheryl.

This is a technique that many web-sites employ to foil email harvesting...

I forget the name of the science, but an ACTUAL HUMAN has to see those letters and can only reproduce them -- thus, nasty software programs are stymied...

Or sumptin like that according to Professor Ralph J. Dauwg...

Pretty innocent...

Thanks Tom!

I'm aware that other websites do it to prevent harvesting of emails but when did eBay implement it when a seller is responding to an ask seller a question?

Mayhaps they be trying to reeduce the number of PHONEY ASQ's?

I get at least 3-4 BOGUS asq's/week from VLADS and other assorted criminal SCUM...
