I sold two vintage radiator valves,

The buyer wrote me and said:
They arrived rusted and covered with mineral stains. In Short exactly like the broken air valves I needed replacing. The ones that had been in my radiator for the last 15 years. The air valves are useless. How do you plan to remedy this?

I wrote
Hi
Im sorry that this happened this has not happend to anyone that bought these and I am unaware of this problem. But you can just send them back to me for a full refund and I will return your shipping them back to me also.
no cost at all to you
Please add tracking on the package as I did
Also please let me know when you ship them so I can watch for them.
Regards

They arrived, this is the email I am writing back to him............

.
Dear xxxx
I received the valves, you did not send them back in the box that they were sent to you in, which I purchased for
(0.50 cents) you took a chance sending them unwrapped in a bubble envelope and they were floating around loosely because you did not wrap them, you just placed them into the bubble envelope.

The valves are NOT rusty as you claim. They are in very good condition. You mislead me in your email by telling me they were "rusted and covered with mineral stains, in short exactly like the broken air valves you are looking to replace.
That was your statement to me in email.

You do not know anything about vintage valves to make a statement such as the one you made to me.
The mineral stain was on the tip of one that was able to be cleaned away with Windex without a problem. The other one did not have mineral stain.
They ARE NOT IN RUSTY CONDITION. They BOTH are in GOOD condition.
Because of your statement to me I offered to return your shipping them back to me, but after checking them I see your statement was incorrect and I will not pay shipping back to me. I will return your original purchase price and your original shipping But I will not pay shipping them back to me.

Question.....should I return his money for shipping them back to me?

Looks like a no win situation. I bet you end up with a neg from this guy in the end. He probably found a pair of them cheaper at the local flee market and thought he could just scam you and send you two back for a refund. Interesting though that he did not return the box's Personally I would not refund his money because he did not return all of the merchandise. I would email him and tell him no refund until ALL of the lot is returned, meaning the box's to. I would also keep copies of all of the emails you have with this guy in case you have to send them in to ebay later.

You probably should refund his shipping because you said you would. However, you should also tell him that you are withholding his refund until he sends back the box. He hasn't held up his end of the agreement yet. If he can't send back the box, then you can keep the shipping cost.

The box in the picture, is that the one he didn't return?

If it's that one then Jack is probably right, he wanted it.

Send nothing & if by chance you do decide to refund then do not refund any postage & charge him a re-stocking fee.

He's going to neg you no matter what you do.

Jack's right...The box is at least 50% of the value on something that old. Make him send the boxes back before you even consider a refund. And I personally would not refund on return shipping.

I keep telling you guys: Don't make a commitment about a return before you actually get the item back.

Better yet, don't take returns. This isn't Home Depot, you know.

But if you feel you must, use these three little words when someone pressures you into accepting a return:

SEND IT BACK.

Nothing more. No partial refunds. And certainly no "100% satisfaction guarantee" although eBay would dearly love to force all sellers to have it. eBay doesn't even offer a satisfaction guarantee, do they?

This guy didn't mislead you; he lied to you. Call it what it is. Next time you'll be prepared for it.

I will remember to do like you say Fluf.........SEND IT BACK..

I did not return his money for sending the items back to me, and I sent him the email that I mentioned I was sending.

He replied to my email........I WILL NOT ANSWER HIS EMAIL because there is nothing more for me to say, you can't convince someone of something when they don't understand.
These valves are 50yrs old never used, they are steel and copper.......rust?....they do not have any rust at all and I sold so many of these without a problem. They come back to buy more.

his email:

Hi
Why are you harassing me? Venting your anger about how I had deceived you!?
Beating me over the head about not sending back the whopping half a dollar you
spent buying the box you sent me. You sincerely think you can wipe away the
green corrosion residing at the tips of those air valves with Windex!? Those
blackened residue at the base of the shank, that rubs off on your fingers is
not rust!? You did not deceive the buyer by not indicating the valves were
USED!?
You tried to pass it off now as "Vintage?"

You really think I enjoyed returning the valves? Waiting on that long pre
holiday line at the post office to mail these things back?

Yes, keep the $4.30, I spent returning those useless used valves. It's all
about you the seller, buyers are all jerks and knuckleheads. How dare they try
to deceive you the Seller, claiming you are selling sub par products. I, the
seller, am God, you mortal buyers know nothing. How dare you question me, my
word is the Gospel.

Get real here. You just managed to killed off a lot of potential business for a
gain of a few dollars. I can tell you are a pennywise, dollar foolish person
by the hissy fit you had for not returning your $.50 box.
