As a dog person, there is no room in my home for cats. My sweetie has a pair of Orange Marmalade Tabbies. They are brothers & are really sweet, but they are still Cats. Sorry, but I am not a cat person. By the way if you don't know what a Marmalade Tabbie is, they are orange with spots & stripes. Hers are George & Jasper, They afe now 7 months old & like all cats are nosy. They get into everything.

Better check the contents on the bags of the cheap stuff. If it is high in ash content, and magnesium you might wind up paying the cost difference in vet fees.

buyhigh is right...
Cats may know what they like, but not necessarily what's good for them. Especially if any of them are neutered tomcats, the high ash and magnesium content of cheap dry food can cause urinary crystals to form, and they can die a painful death from uremic poisoning before you realize they're even sick. If you catch it in time, you'll get off with several hundred dollars worth of vet bills after the animal spends a week or more catheterized in the hospital on IV fluids and big gun antibiotics.
Been there and done that. We have 6 house cats and a dozen or so in the barn. The barn cats are on their own, they kill their own food, but the house cats eat healthy dry food whether they like it or not. It isn't all the same.

I'm a firm believer that the less expensive dry stuff is better for cats and dogs than the fancy wet stuff. Use the money you would spend on high-priced scientific diets with a good vet who can diagnose specific requirements for your pet's condition (a vet who doesn't make their money selling pet food). Dry pet foods are not to be judged by price! My biggest complaint is that some of the really cheap bulk foods seem to launch more moths in the house, but they don't neccesarilY have fewer nutrients.

My cat won't eat canned food, she hates it. She eats dryed food and I give her kitty treats and greenies for her teeth from the Vet. I don't buy their food though because it seems to be to rich and this cats gets sick easy. Right now she likes Purina for old cats.

We use Meowmix--and no that's not where I got my ID from!!!
We've tried cheaper brands but the cats seem to get sick so we always go back to Meowmix. They love it and it doesn't make them sick. In fact they eat it like it's going out of style. We just bought a huge bag of it and now it's just about gone. I'm waiting for our cats to stop meowing and grow snouts and for their tails to get curly. One already snorts because of her Respiratory virus.

So the moths from cheap bulk foods have just as many nutrients as the moths from the expensive stuff..well, that's good news.

profe51:
I had a FUS (feline uralogical syndrome) cat.
It took 3 weeks at the vets when he said he could do no more & to take him to Penn. It took 5 weeks at University of Penn vet hospital to save his life. Not to mention over $2000.00 & this was 30 year ago prices.
All cat owners learn what you can about signs & symptoms of this disease, your vet has lots of info on this, ask for some, & keep in mind speed of treatment is your only chance.
And an early sign to look for is very, very frequent trips to the litter box trying to urinate & not being able to. Go straight to the vets don't delay, not even a day. I was ignorant about this & waited just one day. The next day I could see he was critical.
I was so lucky his life could be saved & it took weeks. He also had surgery to enlarge his urethra.
It can happen to any cat, but neutered males are the ones most likely to be affected.
For the rest of his life I gave him Neo Methionine tablets twice a day & fed him only Science Diet CD, dried food. (he loved it & so did my other cats.) It's good for any cat & may even prevent FUS from ever happening) He lived just short of 19 years.
Tom, what a picture, so sweet.
Jack, I read all your posts about Kitty & they are so touching, I can see the love in every word. I am so sorry.

As a matter of fact, my 8 yr.old neutered cat's vet had me add moist food ( canned type) to his diet of dry food because he did not drink enough liquids.( Cats rarely do) Seems his kidney function according to blood tests was abnormal. Also UA showed low specific gravity. The vet sold no cat food nor suggested any. The canned foods the cat liked best caused caused loose stools for 2 months and he lost a pound and really was dehydrated. I switched to one of the more expensive brands sold only in pet stores (the same as his dry food) and everything was normal in the last lab work. I find the more expensive the brand, the less is eliminated and the litter box smell is reduced to almost nothing. You pay for what you get.

Tom - those two cats in the sink are exactly like mine! I have a 1 year old grey tabby and an orange spotted tabby kitten - but so far there's no cuddling between them - I am hopeful though. Yesterday I caught them sleeping on different parts of my bed.
The reason it seems like your cats eat more of the cheap food is that it doesn't fill them up - they have to eat more of it to get the same nutrition as a smaller quantity of the better stuff. In the end they cost about the same.
I will say that my cat's coat was much prettier when she was on IAMS. I think she likes Meow Mix better but oy! was the litter box full! Both cats are now eating IAMS kitten food til the little one gets bigger.

Jack - When it's time you should think about getting a new kitten. I will say that this little guy I inherited from my daughter makes me laugh all day and is quite the cuddler. Don't tell my daughter because I grumble about how I ended up with him, but he really is a joy!!

According to what I have read (and the Cat Food Review link was excellent), dry foods are deficient in fat and you need to compensate by adding some to the cat's diet if that is all you feed. Also Jack -try reading the label on the food you are feeding. There should be no more than 12% ash content and if the label leaves out the ash content, they could be hiding something.

The word from my vet:
For years dry food has been advised because it helps keep teeth clean. Now the experts are thinking you should feed a combination of dry and wet.
We buy the 20 lb bags of Feline Maintenance at Costco. It's about $8.00 a bag. Trade secret: It's the exact same formula as Science Diet Feline Maintenance at $21.00 a bag. We believe it IS Science Diet, repackaged as a generic warehouse brand.

Fluffy - which was probably what my cat's vet was probably implying when he advised adding wet food to the diet. Since I only feed one cat, I chose to spend a bit more by buying Nutro Special Choice in 3 oz foil packets and mixing it with Special Choice Senior dry and then add a couple tablespoons of water. The packages state that they contain no chicken byproducts and use rice instead of corn. I suspect the corn in the other foods was the chief culprit in causing loose stools. Since the cat is a Persian, cleaning it up so often made the situation desperate.
