Auction went from .99 to 9.99. How did that happen?
3 items available - starting price was .99 so my highest bid was 9.99
auction ended and the ENDING PRICE is showing 9.99! What happened?
nobody else bid.

Did you bid for all three?
That's what happens with dutch auctions if you bid on all.

Yes I bid on all three.
why would it go from .99 to 9.99? I'm bidding against myself or something?
That does NOT make any sense.

that is weird ... I'm sure you don't want to pay $30. for something you thought you would pay $3 for!!! ... wow ... let us know how this works out.

sthoemke is correct. There is no proxy bidding in Dutch Auctions. This is clearly written in simple English in the bidding interface had you taken the time to read:
"When you bid on a Multiple Item Auction, you specify the number of items you're interested in and the price you're willing to pay per item.
Important- For Multiple Item Auction listings, you cannot use eBay's automatic bidding system to enter a maximum (or “proxy”) bid. (For more information, see Bidding on eBay.) Winning bidders will pay a price equal to the lowest winning bid. Winning bids are selected in order of bid price per item. For example, a bid for 5 units at $12 per unit is ranked above a bid for 10 units at $11 per unit. If two bids have the same price per item, the earlier bid is given priority."

It was a dutch auction. If you bid 9.99, that is your bid. No Proxy bidding allowed.

Most people don't know how the dutch auction works.
I had a girl who bid 32.00 a piece for items I was starting at 3.25 she thought the same as you did but no proxy works here in dutch auction.
She had honored her bid and paid me 235.00........lol......she said congratulations on your wind fall...........
Naturally I returned the payment there was no way I could keep her payment when I know she didn't know that proxy bids do not kick in on dutch auctions.
I let her have the items for my opening bid
and she added money for my FVF so it all worked out and she became a repeat buyer on other auctions of mine.

Most bidders have no clue on the dutch auction bidding. I have to agree with the poster that returned the excess payment as it is an obvious mistake on the bidders part.
I NEVER list an item for less than I will minimally take. The ebay system is not together enough for me to subsidize their mistakes. I want to move items not collect massive bidding number so i price the stuff to move.
There are listers who will relie on the bidding process to set the price though. for those listers they will need to decide the real value of the item before they offer any rebates. So if the thing was worth $10 and not the $3 they started at then they do not owe any returns. If the item was worth $3 then they should give some back.
That is how i would do it.
Thanks

Explained this to you before.
It only happens when you bid on all the items a seller has up for bid.
Next time bid on a lesser amount or bid on all with an opening bid and watch if you get out bid!
Then bid as needed.

this is just - I don't know - I want to say obscene or something. It basically means I'm bidding against myself MOL.
The beginning bid was .99 for 3 items. Since there were no other bidders the ending bid should be .99 - period.
This totally flies in the face of the Ebay bidding system - you bid - and in bid increments you win.
I have been on Ebay a while and I DIDN'T know this about multiple items. I'm not even sure it was a dutch auction - the auction doesn't even show what the beginning price was.
This just totally warps my brain.
If I had bid on 2 out of the three it would of been .99
If I had bid .99 on 3 it would of been .99
For me to have put in a high proxy bid and then have that proxy bid enforced just doesn't even make sense.
I think I may have to take a NEG on this one. I'll have to think about it a little more.
Boy I bet Fluffy didn't know about this. All she needs is multiple items and the price just goes out of sight. Bridezilla beware.

I doesn't seem fair. I'd problably take a non-payment checkmark on my record rather than pay the 3x$9.99.
Maybe a quick note to the seller would help to cancel the transaction. They should understand. Maybe offer to pay the listing and/or FVF fees (shouldn't be too much)
You problably won't get neg'd, because you can neg the seller in return. And if both of you send negs, you can alway file for mutaual feedback removal.
