I'd like to open up a website that will be primarily for informational purposes, do I need to go through one of those web registration places, like register.com - or can this be done on my own?
Anybody have any good links that has this info - I'm searching for it, but I keep getting these companies that do it for you. I know the name I want is available, so that's a good start! Thanks in advance for any advice.

I don't believe this can be done on your own. I have mine registered through GoDaddy.com. It's pretty cheap.

There are lots of sites that will register a domain. Some will host your web site as well although you can register with one and host on another if you like. I still have my domain with Network Solutions which is the continuation of the original service I used in the early days of the internet. My web sites are on Verio. I am sure I could find a cheaper combination but I need a lot of space and don't want to rock a boat that is sailing well.
I have noted that Network Solutions has domain registration and hosting packages starting at $9.96 a month for a small basic package.

I have heard about some of the cheap services that register the domain in their name and if you want to leave them won't let you take your domain with you.
I have designed and posted a number of websites for friends and clients. Recently I put up a site for a friend on Way2Host which can register and host the site. It was easy to use and he has been pleased with the service.

Good luck with your website.

I was just on network solutions and really liked them, although they do seem a little more expensive, not that much though. I'll check out the other one you mentioned as well. Thanks!

You will have to register your domain name through a service such as GoDaddy Or Network Solutions. I personally like GoDaddy.
You'll also need a web hosting provider. Depending on who you pick to host your site, many providers will offer to register and set up your domain for you. Check out http://www.ipowerweb.com, they're $7.95 a month with HUGE amounts of storage space and will register the domain name for you.
You MUST do these two things. After that, you have a zillion options to decide when it comes to creating or buying a website/shopping system. But that's a whole 'nother thread.

You can do it through Vendio. Click the "Web Hosting" button on left side of the EO main page. They have one plan that starts at $6.95 per month.

I signed up with Vendio webhosting last week. I was using Yahoo but found Vendio's plan was cheaper and my storage space has gone up 10 times in size compared to what I had with Yahoo! They also have alot of nice site building tools included to help you plan and design your site.

If you don't need a domain name, and if you don't care to pay money every month, and don't require ultimate HTML control, there are plenty of places that offer free web hosting (geocities.com).
Or just find a friend with webspace, and have them host your website for you.

I recently finished moving all my domains from Network Solutions to goDaddy. I found Network Solutions customer non-support to be arrogant, dismissive and unhelpful.
For this I was at one time paying $40/year. Unbelievable.
goDaddy makes it simple to manage your domains and if you don't want to worry about renewals, you can have them auto-renewed through PayPal.
If you go with goDaddy as a registrar (and I would urge you to) be sure to pay the few bucks extra to make your domain PRIVATE. Otherwise you will be bombarded with spam from toads who surf the public NIC databases.
Another benefit of making your domain private is that if you register a (whatever)sucks.com domain, like I did, the person who owns the whatever.com domain cannot find out who you are and may lay awake nights trying to figure out what or who is behind the sucks domain.
Also, once you have your domain make sure it is LOCKED. Network Solutions calls it something other than locking -- I think it's Domain Guard. It keeps other people and registrars from slamming you.
I know this is a lot to comprehend if you didn't grow up setting up name servers and domain names, like I did, but like I said, goDaddy makes it easy. And I admire Bob Parsons. He's a real guy.

As opposed to people who seem to spend the vast majority of their time mocking others and seldom have anything of value to contribute.
Gee, I wonder where in this thread one might see an example of that.

I love goDaddy! I've been with them for a long time now and wouldn't think of changing. Every time I've had a problem, they were there to help.

Cheryl,
Yes, they do a lot for a great price, and there's a lot of marketing savvy to be gleaned from the site as well.
When you register a domain on goDaddy.com, you are offered additional services (upsold) every step of the way. Some of these services are quite valuable, like privacy, and the customer might not have realized he needed them.
Other sites that suck you in with a low price then try to upsell you, like VistaPrint.com (the "free" business card folks) don't do as good a job as goDaddy.com.
I'd like to work for Bob Parsons. I bet I'd learn a lot about making money.

Anyone here run a Blog?
It sounds like fun, and I'm thinking about starting one. Are there are any drawbacks that anyone knows of?

Thanks for all the info - I tried way2host.com and didn't have a good experience with them - never received a reply to 7 help requests! I then tried Network Solutions, and they seemed very user friendly - but I hadn't seen Fluffy's message about customer support, so I'm going to be a bit learly about them. We'll see how it goes. Thanks again all!!

I can't argue with Fluffy's experience with Network Solutions but I have been registered with them since 1995 and have had no problem with customer service.

Hi, I don't remember what I posted, but the reason I deleted it is because I noticed somebody else had already said the same thing.
