eBay is set to announce earnings on Wednesday, and some are also expecting an announcement of some changes to its fee structure. Last year, sellers protested the increases eBay made to some of its fees that took effect in February 2005, including the raising of commission fees for eBay Store items. eBay had announced the fee changes a week before announcing fourth quarter earnings for 2004. This year, rumors have eBay announcing fee changes the same day it announces earnings.
After last year's hue-and-cry over fee increases, President of eBay North America Bill Cobb said he would do a better job of communicating with sellers. Cobb is scheduled to participate in an eBay Town Hall event on January 26, 2006 at 2pm PT ( http://pages.ebay.com/townhall).
Adding to the anticipation over earnings and possible fee changes is an eBay gathering scheduled for this week. eBay is assembling an unknown number of top sellers to its hometown of San Jose for an invitation-only meeting January 17 - 19. Some sellers, who will be attending, told AuctionBytes that eBay has not disclosed the nature of the meeting, which eBay has dubbed "Ecommerce Forum 2006" on the registration page. One seller said he was looking for candid conversation to take place, not a PowerPoint slide presentation. He hoped the meeting would focus on things to benefit high-volume sellers, though he did not expect eBay to announce discounts for high-volume sellers.
ED: I guess it would be TOMORROW and NOT TODAY.

I hope they announce soon. Whatever the case is, I will adjust my business model to match, but it would be nice to know what is going to happen!

Perfect timing... eBay raises fees just after the Post Office raises their rates. Gotta love it.

You guys sound positively EAGER for this to happen. Are you going to be disappointed if it DOESN'T?
I know it's better to have the bad news than to try to avoid the truth, but this thread doesn't read like that

LOL if that's replay, it looks like he got a hold of some BAD seafood or something...kinda green around the gills.
Nah- I don't WANT it to happen...I just want to KNOW one way or the other (yeah I sometimes jump to the end of novels too and then continue reading, no matter how it turns out).

Replay has gone away. His former pudgy, yet curiously attractive body is now inhabited by the all-knowing, all-powerful Dr. Arcane, who STILL cannot get that doggone Bible verse thing to work.
The Qur'an verse works just fine though, doesn't it? No wonder they're taking over!
I really don't have time to fiddle with it today, so learn to love the Qur'an, it's all you're going to get until the weekend!

Yep, that's it - Good news...No fee change in stores (which is the majority of my ebay business now) and more store exposure...Ebay Express seems kind of intereting, though I know free in 2006 means fee in 2007!

I am pleased that eBay did not announce any increases to store fees. If they can hold the line for another year, we store owners may just do very well. What a surprise.

"Set your PayPal account to ship to unconfirmed addresses or make sale-by-sale decisions"
Nope, I don't get it either. I thought PayPal wanted you to ship only to confirmed, not unconfirmed. Got me scratching my head.

Thanks for the post, TnErnie and Niel.
The eBay Express sounds like it might be good for sellers with new fixed-price inventory. I haven't had time to truly explore the whole thing.
Not sure about that unconfirmed address stuff. Will need to explore that further...
One thing I notice is, at last, eBay is recognizing sellers with good feedback. To my mind, that's very important. New bidders need to have a good buying experience if they're to stay with eBay.

So eBay Express is a new site with fixed price items only?
That makes sense. They have been trying to steer people away from auctions for years. They couldn't do it, so now they've decided to start over with a new site.
Yes, right now it will feature items from regular eBay. How long until they start charging for things to appear on both sites? Then what, it splits into a completely seperate site in a few years?
This could have a much larger long-term impact than it at first appears.

It looks like Ebay Express will NOT be limited to NEW items... here's a "pink" (ebay employee) response on the Store Board:
[email protected] View Listings | Report Jan-18-06 22:20 PST 58 of 67
Hi everyone,
Some of you may remember me from last year, when I worked on the eBay Stores team here at eBay. Hopefully I got a chance to meet some of you the past few years at eBay Live.
As Trey posted, the eBay Express team has been extremely busy this week with the eCommerce Forum and setting up the initial information about eBay Express for today's announcement.
We're going to spend some time tomorrow answering questions on the main eBay Express thread that Bill Cobb kicked off today with his post. The post is located here:
http://forums.ebay.com/db2/thread.jspa?threadID=2000071413
If it helps, let me at least answer the "one question" that seems to be the subject of many posts here. eBay Express will in fact allow shoppers to buy both new & not-new items. The reason eBay Express requires item condition is so that we can make it easier and more convenient for buyers to clearly shop for the type of merchandise they are looking for.
Hope this helps! We're very excited to work with you over the coming months on eBay Express.
Adam

Reading between the lines and through the tea leaves it looks like eBay Express is a pre-emptive move to compete with the next iteration of Google Base (still in beta development). It's a smart move, but spliting one market into two may create headaches for sellers and buyers alike unless some form of cross-promotion is integrated into the new platform.
I'm sure it's been in development a long time and eBays best software engineers were working on it (the ones who always introduce new features just as the peak 'end of year' sales start) so we can all sleep peacefully. Yeah right!

Splitting one market into two? I thought that eBay Express is going to be a subset of eBay.com and that express items will also show up in regular auction searches. Am I missing something?

No, what you said is right. But splitting it later has got to be something eBay is considering. After all, if you have to have competition, isn't it better (for eBay) if they own BOTH competitors?
