I just sold a high end reel to reel. It was in great working condition (according to my husband who is a vintage stereo buff with excellent hearing).
The guy got it and said one channel wasn't working correctly - lower volume than the other and inconsistently.
He said he wanted to take it in to have it looked over but would return it if I preferred.
As soon as I replied the next day - he stated that he had already taken in and the repair guy said it was probably just dirty heads. This is what my husband had thought as well / or one of the heads could have be jarred in shipping and was out of line.
Yesterday (a full week later) he emailed me and then called me saying that the repair guy said it had an electronic problem and wasn't cost effective to repair (he paid $250 and I've seen them sell as high as $500 on ebay - off ebay they run $700.00. The tech also said it was a preexisting problem. Is he calling us liar's?
My buyer then said we were welcome to call the tech and talk to him - which my husband plans to do today.
This morning I get an email demanding a full refund asap.
I'm stuck in the middle here but my husband is not in the habit of lying to me and to be honest he REALLY loved this unit and would have loved to keep it.
I don't see how the tech can say it was not damaged in shipping if he doesn't know what's wrong?
I keep hearing Fluffy saying tell him to "Send it back" But shipping is $70.00 both ways.
I expect the phone to ring any second.

Fluffy knows best...Take it back and be done with the situation. You can resell it after you have a chance to check it out.

Sorry to be a skeptic but what if is a switcharoo? How does one protect themselves in this instance?

You should always copy down the serial number on a piece of electrical/mechanical/camera equipment that you sell.

Copying the serial number wouldn't help in this case. You'll receive the same machine back. It will be one of the boards inside that has been switched between his bad unit and your good unit. If you take it back, examine the inside carefully. You will be able to detect any non-factory made solder joints.

RARELY, but NOW & THEN, Ralphie & I sell USED ELECTRONICS...

Like the VINTAGE RADIOS a few months back...And some used PC EQUIP...

ANYHOO: everytime we sell this stuff, it is the ONLY time we sell: "AS IS ~ NO RETURNS ~ NO REFUNDS"

As Ralphie notes in his biography: "I ain't RADIO SHACK & I did NOT go to the PACIFIC COLLEGE OF BIBLE-THUMPING!"

If he had someone open it up without your agreement, I think it's his to keep.

I get really energetic with my UV pen when it's possible to open up equipment with no risk of damage, and I'll mark anything that will hold a mark.

How does that work with the UV pen? I understand if they switch it out but how do you prove you marked it before you shipped? And were do you get those pens?
He just called me. Boy is he pushy.
He said he is getting the idea that I don't plan to work with him! It's been less than 24 hours since he told me what the stereo place said and my husband still hasn't been able to talk to the tech.
Of course - he paid with paypal so we all knows what that could mean!!!

ladyjewels2000 - They sell the UV pens and detection lights on ebay. Here's a Link for one of them.

Interesting thing in this listing is there is a long audio chat from the seller??? Never heard this before. Is it allowed on ebay???

ladyjewels,

So far, I've only had to mention secret marks to get people to slink away. If shipped USPS, I guess that you could file for mail fraud if they return it without marks. I don't photograph them before I ship, but maybe I should do that on expensive items.

Then the question that begs to be asked is, What photo are you using in your auctions?

Stone, Cash does not photograph the marks. You would have to take a photo using UV to have proof of the marks. Not hard to do, just an extra step in the process.

I have even been known to photograph different stages of packing when I suspect a high $$ item might be subject to damage claims. You can't have too many pictures saved for items such as mechanical clocks, tube radios, even computers. I also take photos of serial numbers and identifying wear marks on my pricier items.

Have not needed to use them yet, but I sleep better at night.

LadyJ, it may be too late, but the first thing you should have told him when you found out he had taken it to a shop was that it voided his right to return the item.

And by NO means refund his money until you receive the item back and can inspect it.

All electronics I sell have an "As Is" disclaimer. Electronics of any kind are prone to damage that may not bee seen. One good drop can break a trace in a circuit board and the shipping box might not even show a dent.

The "As Is" disclaimer does not seem to affect final price either.

All good advise. I have already started the insurance claim.
I did tell him in our "heated" conversation yesterday that I did not authorize him to take it to a repair shop (I have all the emails to document that).
My husband talked to the repair guy and he didn't open the machine up or anything like that but the best yet was that he wasn't using a pre-recorded tape and he did not know the quality of the tape he was using - it was a tape the customer had recorded himself awhile back. I don't know if anyone has tried a known quality tape. Wouldn't that be a hoot if all it is a bad tape!!
Anyway in his email last night, there was definitely a change in his tone. I think he now realizes that my husband knows more about this stuff than either he or his repair guy does!!!
Also I talked directly to the owner of the repair shop and what he told me was different regarding how the damage (if there is any) was cause. He said and I quote "Things like this can always happen in shipping with electronics" - nothing like what I was quoted by the winner.

LtRay,

As is to be expected, you were right and stone was being stone.

I tried to do it today, and couldn't understand why it didn't work, until I remembered that I have a UV filter on the lens. DOH!!! Thank goodness my wife still loves such a dodo

Update.
I know I shouldn't have but I took the reel to reel back. I felt he was going to do a charge back either way and at least this way I have the item.
We got it back, plugged it in and it works just fine?? I don't have a clue what this guy is trying to pull. Maybe he just didn't know how to work it???
I wrote the winner and told him I would refund the purchase price less a 10% restocking fee (no deduction for all other fees). I sent him photos of the little needles jumping up and down (he said one wasn't moving at all)as proof it's working.
Well you guessed it - he filed with paypal - lying all the way, but he would have done this anyway.
I will fight it but I know he will probably get his purchase price back. I don't care about that too much, as I fully intended to refund less fees (or 10%)anyway but shipping I do care about. It will be unfair for me to have to eat that cost.
I think what is fair is that I relist it and give him that amount (up to his purchase price less fees) but as the market is weaker now - the sale price may go down.
OK so for now - am I locked out of paypal up to that amount? Should I stop all paypal until this is resolved?

D:

Having just gone thru TWO chargebacks over the past 4 months, Ralphie & I can offer this advice:

1) PayPal will REMOVE from your account (euphemistically called: TEMPORARY HOLD) the amount of the CHARGEBACK only...

2) If that amount exceeds yer current balance, then, as more moola is deposited into your account, that too is removed...

3) THUS, it donna really accomplish anything to stop using PayPal...

4) RESPOND to PayPal ASAP with ALL the info required...

5) "RE-STOCKING FEES" are fine, as long as it was mentioned in the original listing...I think ye be on relatively shakey ground, if it twernt...

6) GOOD LUCK! Ya never know..you might WIN! Ralphie & I won BOTH of ours!

Thanks Tom - I think I may need it.
I did reply to paypal but that ticks me off too - he wrote a book full of lies and I was only allow 200 characters??? What's up with that? I've got long emails, photo proof it's working but that won't fit in the space paypal allowed me??
Will I be able to get this information to them?

PayPal should have sent you an email from "RESOLUTION CENTER" with a ticket number:

DO NOT HIT REPLY! But, in that email is the email address for you to CONTACT PayPal if you want to ADD info to your case!

OPEN a NEW email in you email program, and COPY&PASTE that email address in the "TO:" box -- be sure to place the "TICKET NUMBER" in the "Subject" line...

And yer off & running!

Tom
The email came from [email protected] and there was no other email address given. It advised me to go to my paypal account and ....
I think I will just email them directly from my paypal account with the case# and my side of the story.
