Much glass is clear, but by golly, that piece is invisible.

Ah...it worked....anyway. I came across this glass piece and glass is not my thing. It's about 18" across. Weighs about 30-40 lbs. It has 4 markings. 2 are heads of people. one says 84. One is initials that look like M.Y.A. Is it trash or treasure? Any info would be appreciated.

That piece is spectacular. I've never seen anything like that. Is the metal silverplate? Looks like a monogram in the center. Got more pictures?

"84" could be Continental or Russian silver, but don't take my word for it. I'll look through my books
Can you take a picture of the marks?

longtime: Do the marks look like they might be consistent with the Russian marks? You can see it, we can't.
If so, my suggestion would be to contact A La Vieille Russie in New York. That's what I'd do. [email protected]
If you tell me you paid $5 for this at a thrift store, I'm just going to faint.

Thanks fluff.....I'll try that. The marks definitely look like the russian marks on the site you provided. And there's no smelling salts needed for you. This piece came from a friend of a friend of my mom's. An 80-90 year old woman who says she paid $1000 for this piece 40 years ago in an antique store. But I've heard stories like that many times and it turns out to be trash. My untrained eye thought this was more treasure than trash, and so far you've all confirmed my own feelings. The lady is in poor health physically and financially and I'm just trying to do my best to make sure she gets what the piece is worth.

Give the lady my respectful regards and let her know I admire both her taste and her acumen.
Today Russia is flush with capitalist cash. This piece could return home and provide your lady with substantial funds. At least I hope it will.

It looks like cut crystal to me, too. I have a small bowl with this same pattern dated 1900. Is it possible that the silver is Russian and the crystal is elsewhere? It's beautiful. I agree with fluffy - what a find! I don't think I could part with it. At least not until I've spent days looking at it.

Working on the initials - the last name " Yurievsky " was found in the Russian Royal family. I couldn't come up with anyone with the initials "M" and "A" though.

AWESOME! That is the most gorgeous piece of glass that I have seen in ages. The style of the silver definitely makes me think it is Victorian influence.
Here is an interesting article about what happened to all of the Imperial wealth following
the October Revolution of 1918. Such destruction would make this bowl even more valuable.
Imperial Russia
I think it would be worth some time to delve into where this bowl has been. If your lady can remember
the antique store, there might be a truly interesting story behind this bowl.
Someone mentioned the initial Y, it looks more like an F to me. Could it be the Faberge` family?

Um, guys, Russians use a Cyrillic alphabet. M, Y and A may not mean what they seem to mean in English.

you wouldn't sell this on Ebay would you? I would think Sotheby's or Doyle's, someplace like that. I don't know where you're located but Doyle's has some free appraisal days listed on this page:
http://www.doylenewyork.com/default.htm
Sotheby's has some email addresses:
http://search.sothebys.com/jsps/live/dept/DeptSpecialists.jsp?dept_id=43
and these people get some pretty good prices for smaller lesser pieces than what this one looks like:
http://www.iconastas.co.uk/stock.asp?Cat=1
Now THIS is interesting!
