Anyone have any insights on what type of payment is available and makes sense for a $100 transaction. I will not accept Paypal. Western Union, money gram, or cash all offer no buyer protection from Ebay. Any ideas that I can offer the buyer. So far I've offered the buyer a choice of check/money order drawn and payable through a US bank, or cash in an envelope.

I have done a couple of Western Union Money Transfers from South Africa. My buyers never had a problem with it and most seemed familiar with the system. Some even suggested it as their prefered payment method.

For small transactions US$ cash is easiest and probably cheapest - they can buy at banks and bureau d'changes. For larger transactions then wires or bank transfers provided the buyer can get permission (exchange controls are in effect there). Most wealthy Afrikaners have offshore bank accounts so they at least can pay in a variety of currencies.

Credit card payments may be an option depending on your processor's ability to verify the buyer's billing address. I know WorldPay can verify South African credit cards, but I doubt many US processor's could since they don't have the historic banking links of UK and Dutch banks.

Finally there is always the option of Krugerrands in full or fractional sizes. Larger banks and jewelers are always happy to buy them.

Ya! A good old 1/4 ounce K-Rand. Haven't seen one of those in years. Oops I forgot I have some in one of my bank boxes. Oh well.

Anyway Mike is right Western Union Money transfer is the best. They send it from any Western Union office and then they email you the transaction number or a copy of the receipt you go to the local Western Union (any currency exchange) and pick up the cash. Doesn't cost you a cent.
I get them all the time and there is no charge back.

Couldn't resist a reply sorry

OK, though still banned by eBay but approved by PayPal (ironically) your buyer can go to Buyer Services > Make a Payment and select USD by Paypal or check to you, and South African Rand (ZAR by transfer) to auctionchex.

The page calcs all the values, the result is a local bank transfer in Rand to us, and a USD payment to you.

Auctionchex....if the buyer does this, how do I receive payment. And even if I received a check wouldn't the rest of my Paypal balance be subject to risk. To be clear, wouldn't I have the same "no seller protection" under these circumstances as if I just accepted a normal Paypal payment. Sounds to me like Auctionchex is protected, the buyer is protected, and the risk remains with me and Paypal...which in the end means me.

Let me run it by you one more time

Your buyer is in South Africa, they do a bank transfer in Rand to our South African bank account.

We now have their money, they cannot get it back from us, but that money is destined to you, but you don't want SA Rand in a SA bank, you would prefer a USD check, which we will send you, or we could send you USD by Paypal.

Seller protection is not an issue, we do not refund the buyer, they get what they paid for > a USD payment to you.

longtime1 - Just want to make sure you understand (in case you are not familiar with them) that auctionchex is NOT some fly by night single operator. He is in the business of money transfers. You may want to check out their website and also other post here on the ebay board about his service. www.auctionchex.com

They are not, how shall we say, sanctioned by ebay as a authorized payment method because the "buyer" has no chance of doing a chargeback. However it does give the seller full chargeback protection. Once they send the money to auctionchex they send you a check in the mail in your prefered currency or as he stated does a payment to your paypal account.

Ebay doesn't allow auctionchex to be placed within ebay's auction listings. However, it is allowable to offer auctionchex in your WBN and you should. It is your item. Not ebays. Accept anything you damm well please. Plus, you need to quit worring about the buyers protection and cover your own rear end. Offer it. Offer to accept cash plus what others have suggested here.

I'm flexible on South African payments - I also accept shares in certain Joburg listed mining companies. (Love those Gold/Diamond mining shares!)
