Here is how to fix eBay's screwed up cross promotion settings so every seller in the world cannot sell on your listing.

First: Click on the site map.

Second: Scroll down to the sub-title "My Account" Click on preferences.

Third: Scroll to "Promoting Similar Items on eBay Pages and Emails" Click on Show.

Here is what it should look like. If different, click edit and change. You will need to click the do not cross promote my items to keep other sellers listing off of yours.

Promoting Similar Items on eBay Pages and Emails Hide

Promote my items with other sellers' items in the following areas: Edit
End of Item notices for unsuccessful bidders no
Watch notification emails and My eBay Items I'm Watching No
Closed item pages for unsuccessful bidders No
Closed item pages for visitors No

Select items for Favorite Seller Top Picks Automatically Edit

Participate in cross promotions YES Edit

Participate in cross-promotion connections YES edit

Then when complete, on the left scroll down to the link titled, cross promotion connections. This is where you ask for other sellers to be your contacts.

I suggest checking this monthly as it is clear that ebay is going to mess with preferences on their own and switch them to default to the dreaded cross-promoting from time to time.

Updated to show the consensus of all to limit the eBay damage.

Thanks again, Stone. I went in and saw that eBay had indeed changed my preferences!!!

One question: In your instructions, above, you had one line: "Select items for Favorite Seller Top Picks Automatically Edit"

Are you suggesting we do something with that? On the face of it, I didn't see a problem but maybe I'm missing something?

I just copied and pasted the page for the example. I made bold the real important fields, but with ebay lately, it is going to be a good idea to check everything.

To answer your question roady, it sounds like you won't have to do anything with that particular link.

I wish that would work for me, but it doesn't. Everything was checked exactly like it was supposed to be. I went in yesterday, checked and saved and now they are still there.

I'll do it again. Thanks Mike

I don't think that's quite right - the "Participate in Cross Promotions" refers to your OWN cross promotions. You probably don't want to opt out of that.

Here's the screen shots I saved from October when this first came up:

1) Here is what these other seller items look like:

These are the things that need to be unchecked:

That being said, even IF those items are unchecked, the other seller items STILL show on many sellers' listings.

Well, I went in, checked everything, unchecked everything and then increased my personal cross promotion items to 12. Waited a bit and then went and looked. Other sellers seems to be gone.

On the Power Sellers board they mentioned that if you cross-promote with someone else, then other sellers don't show up.

So, if someone wants to partner up in the future, I would be more than happy to show your postcards, car parts, scales or doo-dads on my closed listings. Just not my competitors

I don't think that's quite right - the "Participate in Cross Promotions" refers to your OWN cross promotions.

As it reads, it does appear that way, the problem is in order for you to promote your items in other sellers auctions, then you must accept cross promotions from other sellers that are selling the exact same items that you are. That is where the problem lies. Potential buyers will be seeing your competitors items and if they happen to have a better deal, you can bet they will pass on your item for your competitor.

Stone the part that refers to other seller's items is this one:
Promote my items with other sellers' items in the following areas

The part that has to do with the boxes displayed promoting your OWN items is this one (most people do not want to opt out of this):

Neglus,

As it is written, you are correct. But in my experience, it has not worked out that way. Whenever I have cross-promoted, every other yahooooo's items have showed up in mine.

Go ahead and try cross-promoting your items and let the rest of us know if the other garbage is showing up or not. Who knows, maybe eBay finally got that right.

Neglus: DO let us know how this works for you! I'd love to cross-promote my own things but don't want any of the other garbage. Adele

You think so Tom ?
Look here:

I think the point is that no matter what preferences you have checked ebay does what it wants!

You are correct. All mine from yesterday still show as well. But all those closed before we changed back. I am hoping it will take effect on our present open auctions, but is possible that it may not take effect until newly entered auctions.

It has nothing to do with auctions - these are (or were) preferences. Changes should be across the board.

So far it appears that eBay is screwed up. Even with the preferences set correctly, other sellers items are still showing up. The word has been given to eBay. Just awaiting their canned response.

The best way to fix this is to set up cross promotion with other sellers of your choosing - I just took Vintageads up on her offer and it worked! Her stuff now shows on my closed listings and mine shows on hers. If my sister is REALLY nice I might even cross-promote with her! LOL

EBay should tell it like it is: Choose the sellers you want to cross-promote or we will choose them for you!

Neglus seems to have it hit on the head. I have changed my preferences to sellers of my choice and that does take all of the unwanted sellers out and replace them with the choosen ones. At least you could pick a seller that isn't selling the same stuff, unlike the forced ebay crap.

Perfect statement Pixi.

I just had a thought.

What if we were to set up a second selling account? Then simply don't sell with the second account, but cross promote with each other. Then it would only show your own items. It doesn't cost anything to have the second account unless you list with it. Or you could even sell with the second account if you choose to.

stone - That is a brilliant idea. I never even thought about using one of my other user ID's.

Where do I go to cross promote with myself? Is it somewhere under the Promote Similar Items section?

I tried to cross promote with my buying ID and it didn't work. There has to be at least one item (I guess) that the other ID is selling.

Until then, I'm proud to provide advertising space for my postcard selling friend And since she has a gizillion more feedback then I, it can only make me look better to lie (lay?) at the foot of her auctions. (LOL)

LOL I hope this isn't the way ebay has chosen to make amends for removing stores from gen search!

I just had a thought...as long as we select the sellers who appear on our listings, I wonder if we now check all the boxes in the "Promote my items with other sellers' items in the following areas", our links will appear on other sellers' listings (not just the ones we cross-promote with). That would mean we could choose the sellers on our listings but would get more exposure on listings where sellers have not set up "cross promotion connections".

very very sneaky of ebay... The cross-promotions don't show up to the seller, only to others.

If I look at my own items signed in as me, they look sparkly-clean. But log out or sign into another account and lo and behold they are littered with cross-promotions!

Hmmm. I opted out totally from the cross promotions. I signed out of eBay and just sampled a few of my newly listed items and see none of that happening there--no cross promotions. Would someone please check this auction of mine just to be sure? Thanks.
