I see these wierd looking numbers all over the Internet where your told to copy them below for security & click enter. eBay is using them now.

What are they for & why do they have to be in odd shapes & often in color. Why not just plain numbers.

Sometimes I can hardly figure them out.

I with you, mcjane. A couple of times I've misread those fuzzy numbers and had to repeat. Why can't they just be plain numbers?? Why don't they ask US first???!

Jane & Roady:

They are designed to confuse harvesting bots -- since they are hard to read, only a REAL LIVE person can read them & input the letters into the box...THUS, the website is assured that some auromatice harvesting robot program ain't doing it...

road, I had to repeat more than once & I was so sure I had them right.

Tom, that makes sense about a live person having to read them.

Now ask Ralphie, what's a bot??

shorthand for...(ro)bot

Remember way back when? When AW's actual BIZ was running a "spider robot" program all over eBay until they took AW to court?

"BOTS" are automatic programs that "crawl" over web-sites for various legitimate & illegitimate purposes...

WikiWalphie WEVEALS ALL!

Yikes! ELMER FUDD!!!!

I do remember reading about a spider & something to do with AW & eBay. Never understood it, still don't, but it's interesting.
At least now I know what a bot is.

Thanks Tom

I was wondering about these weird numbers as well. About 1/2 the time I can't read them.
I thought it was ebay spying one me!!! LOL
Thanks Tom - now I won't be so paranoid.
