JACK. The fuel prices here is australia are governed by what your prices are in the u.s.a. You guys are paying way too much. And so are we here. i filled my diesel tanks on my 4wd yesterday. and paid the equivlent$4.50.us per gallon. Further out west we will be paying about $5.00.u.s to $5.20.u.s. per gallon. When you are feeding a 30 ton excavator , it sure mounts up fast.

So good luck with your march jack. hope you get 2 million people. HIT THEM WHERE IT HURTS THE MOST.

Hey Jack-this is why were paying so much
this scumbag oil executive getting a 400 million pension

april 14, 2006— Soaring gas prices are squeezing most Americans at the pump, but at least one man isn't complaining.

Last year, Exxon made the biggest profit of any company ever, $36 billion, and its retiring chairman appears to be reaping the benefits.

Exxon is giving Lee Raymond one of the most generous retirement packages in history, nearly $400 million, including pension, stock options and other perks, such as a $1 million consulting deal, two years of home security, personal security, a car and driver, and use of a corporate jet for professional purposes.

For years I have been saying (and I'm going to get blasted for this) that the best thing that could happen is that gas prices skyrocket. Might give the auto/truck manufacturers a reason to make a engine that get's better gas mileage. I hope it get's up to $4 or $5 a gallon. Bring it on.

For years the auto and truck manufacturers have been making engines that consume huge quantities of fuel with little to show as far as power goes at the flywheel. Why is it that I can buy a 1995 International with a DT466 diesel engine that get's if I'm lucky 7-9 gallons per mile and today if I buy a 2006 International with a 466E diesel engine it get's if your lucky 1-2 miles per gallon better fuel economy. Hmm, because they DON'T CARE WHAT YOU ARE PAYING FOR FUEL. I can take the same 1995 International and with only $500-600 worth of modifications to the engines fuel, intake and exhaust system and get close to a 80 hp and 250-300 ft/lb of torque increase, get 4-5 mpg better fuel economy and on top of that cut the particulate count in 1/2(emmisions for a diesel).

Another comparission. I own two Chevrolet Impala's. One is a 1966 with a inline 6 250 and 3 on the tree (you old geazers remember them don't you). The other is a 2004 with a 3.6 Litre engine and 4 speed automatic overdrive trans. Well guess what, the 1966 GETS THE SAME EXACT FUEL ECONOMY!!! That being 22MPG average and the 66 is 100 percent stock. I have not even tinkered with the fuel, intake and exhaust system yet. I bet I can get close to 28-30MPG by the time I'm done with it. Now just sit there a second and think about that. A car that has a curb weight almost 1 1/2 times of it newer brother with a carbuerated engine getting the same fuel economy as the new car, just plain sad.

My point here is that if everyone, that would be you, me and the joe shmoe beside you complained to the auto manufacturers and not the fuel companies about poor fuel economy they might do something about it and then that increase at the pump wouldn't bother you so much.

Another cancer in this country is every other boob has to have a boat anchor for a vehicle that gets horrible fuel economy. Why, because they can. Ain't helping mother earth any that's for sure. Do I have pleasure vehicles, yes and they all have highly modified diesel engines that the majority get 2 times or more better fuel economy than they did stock. Another thing I do is make on average 1/3 of the fuel I burn. Three words, reprossesed cooking oil. Got to love burning french fry oil in my trucks. Get's better fuel economy than diesel alone, is better for the engine, has superior emissions lowering capability and best of all cost me about 1/2 as much to process as it does to buy diesel at a station.

Talked to my neighbor the other day and had to laugh at him. He owns a 2003 Ford 1 Ton dullie with of all things a gas engine in it. He's lucky if he is getting 12-13 miles to the gallon in that oversized brick. Does he need it? No. He just liked the way it looks (gota be cool complex). The most I have ever seen him have in the bed is 5 or 6 bags of groceries. Worst yet, its his daily driver to work. HA, HA, HA, FOOL!!! Tell's me he's thinking of getting rid of it because its going to bankrupt him if fuel prices keep going up. Well who's fault is that? Not mine that's for sure. Told him when he sells it and buys another one to do himself a favor and get with me first. If he has to have a truck he should get a 3/4 Ton single rear wheel diesel engine and send it to me to work the engine over. I'll guarentee I can get him 1 3/4 to 2 times better fuel economy by the time I'm done and will cut his emissions in half. If he get's a diesel he can then also start making his own fuel in his basement. Still lot's of fast food restraunts around here that pay to have their cooking oil taken away and would be more than happy to give it to him.

Is fuel overpriced and the fat cat's pockets overflowing with your money, yes. Not much I can do about that. I can however buy vehicles that get better fuel economy new or in my case modify older ones. That hurts the auto manufacturers and at some point the lightbulb will go off to start producing high efficency engines.

Those of you not in the vehicle industry just don't realize how much you are being shafted. I have seen prototype vehicles that have hydraulic and electric resistance braking that recovers the energy normally lost as heat and reuses it to propel the vehicle. Think you will ever see it if no one complains to the manufacturer about poor economy, no. I have been tinkering with a hydraulic resistance brake system for about a year now and hopefully will have all the kinks worked out by the end of the year. Should increase my city driving milage by another 10-15%. So whey you see a truck drive PAST the gas station next time with some guy driving with a beard laughing his fool head off while your filling up your brick just remember it might be me. I'll be laughing my way past alot of fuel pumps so bring on the high fuel prices.

Well my torch is lit and ready. That jerk wad getting 400 million pension is such crap. And all the while we still buy their gas. Lets get out the bikes and get some exercise. I am fed up.

Don't know if anyone else feels it but I have an ominous feeling of the economy doing a real dump and me on the bottom. OH PS get your shovels out to bring along with the torches we may have to dig our way up through all the $h*~.

Now for a little more common sense, we light up all the gas that would be like cutting off our noses to spite our face--is that how it goes or is it to spite their face. Well you get my gist. But I am fed up with all this crap with gas, and now they want to put another dollar tax on my cigarettes in Texas to lower property taxes. NOW that is just plain unfair, they want to pay for the schools then tax everyone not just smokers. Hum you done done it, got me riled. Now I am really pi$$ed can't smoke and can't drive anywhere to go off a cliff.
Wonder if Lee Raymond would like to adopt me, I would not need much, he could give me a days worth of pay and it would last me a long time I do believe.

Mike, you speak the truth. All people would have to do is spend some time in Europe with those economical cars all over the place, then come back here. The huge size of American cars seems really obscene in comparison. There's an awful lot of "guy stuff" going with automobiles--gotta have the biggest, the loudest, the shiniest, the most expensive.

I've been interested to hear people we know here in our mountain town suddenly "getting it" and talking about getting a car that gives better mileage. I agree with you; perhaps the high gas prices will in the long run serve our country well.

Mike...Your wish may come true sooner than you think. Regular unleaded is about $3.25 per gallon in most of California today. I fully expect to see $4.00 per gallon gas on Memorial day weekend. People will have all summer to complain before they get hit with the Labor Day weekend spike. I won't venture a guess as to what that will be. But it will move us closer to the day when hydrogen finally gets moved off the back burner and into the #1 lanes of Calif freeways. The safety issue has been resolved. The technology is here today. The raw source for coastal states is free. Photovoltaic power for the cracking process is reliable and becoming cheaper every day. The present governor is in favor of it. The main thing holding it up is partisan politics and opposition from oil companies. The day the first car removes $2500.00 worth of smog equipment from under the hood of his car, and starts a trip at the Oregon border and drives to the Mexican border on .39 cents per gallon fuel, extending his middle finger at every smog inspection station along the route, will be the day the voters in this state will start a drive to outlaw fossil fuel and any vehicle powered by it.

roadsmith - I agree, it's a guy thing. However I think it has jumped the gender gap, seen many a gal in a big p/u truck or jacked up jeep. I won't deny it though, I'm one of those guys in a oversized truck, some of which have huge tires, but hey, that's my business. It is funny however to talk to some poor guy driving a so called "fuel effecient" US marketed vehicle that was duped into thinking his little tin can is pinching every bit of power it can out of the fuel. I love bursting their bubble by telling them what they could be getting in real life and usually use whatever I'm driving at the time as a example. Get lot's of frowns, not directed to me but at the salesman at the car dealership that convinced them they were getting a super effecient engine. I agree with you. People in this country need to travel to other countries and see what the meaning of a REAL fuel effecient vehicle really is. I took a trip to Germany last year to go to a European auto show. Man, you should see what the Brits and Russians are doing with over the road tractor diesel engines. They even make my engine modifications look like cr**p. One Russian tri axle tractor I was looking at was running a 900 cubic inch range engine (about the average size for a tractor) and was getting OVER 20mpg. OMG, over 20 mpg with a load of fully loaded double's trailers. Shoot, you would be lucky to get 8mpg on a tri axle tractor unloded from a US market truck. Wish Cat, Cummins, International and Detroit would pull their heads out of their back sides and take a trip overseas and see the possibilities. Shoot, you won't even find one medium/heavy truck manufacturer in this country that publishes fuel mileage ratings. Unlike the automotive industry they are not required to publish that info and I think their just to damn embarased to.

Oil prices are still somewhat consumer driver, forgive the pun.

This latest news reports shows that oil prices drop with the news release of stable usage reports.

Oil prices fall as gasoline demand weakens, supplies rise

If everyone could just reducing their weekly driving by 20%, we would see gas prices level off or even drop.

It is not that hard to do. Make a shopping list and go shopping once a week instead of everyday. Eat at home instead of going out for fast food. It is the little stuff that adds up.

We can start to cut back now or we'll all be walking in a few years. Has everyone forgotten the 70's already??
